Mark Starns named new coach at Fleming County

Featured Replies

Mark Starns has been introduced as the new head basketball coach at Fleming County.

Is this the same guy that was at Madisonville?

Note sure if he was ever that Madisonville. He's been at Johnson Central and Henderson Co his last two jobs I beleive.

You are correct.

^ Henderson County was the team I was thinking about

Think he had been there 5 years and then they let him go this year.

Goldie,

Not to nitpick, but you have Starns' name spelled wrong in the thread title. You have it right in here, but the title could confuse some people.

I'd change it myself, but they won't give me the keys. lol.

Fleming County introduced Mark Starns as its new boys’ basketball coach on Friday afternoon.

He replaces Brian Kelly, who resigned a couple of weeks ago to move to Tennessee.

Starns, son of former Lexington Catholic coach Tommy Starns, coached at Henderson County the past five years. He compiled a 99-45 record before getting fired last spring.

He has also coached at Johnson Central, leading the Golden Eagles to the 2006 Sweet Sixteen, and at Burgin.

Starns, an EKU graduate, also has been to four state tournaments as an assistant coach — at Lexington Catholic with his dad in 1985, and at Mason County, under Kelly Wells, in 2002-04.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention....looks like another mod has changed it.

Was Coach Starns at Mason County during Kelly Wells tenure there?

Coach Starnes was the assistant under Kelly Wells during the Chris Lofton years. Mason won the State tourney in 2003 and was runner up in 2004. He also was assistant for the Lady Royals for one season who lost in the Regional finals. He came to Mason from the Boston Celtics were he was an assistant under Rick Pitino. Good Luck Mark as the Mason-Fleming rival just got a little more intense if that's possible. Can't wait until you come to the Fieldhouse.

Never thought FC would go in this direction, the name and Mason County mystique must have been the difference. A Coach is only as good as his players(has anyone heard of Henderson County?) and Fleming has them, so look for immediate success.

When was the last time that happened?

I really don't think Starna to Fleming makes the rivalry heat up any. Were Buddy Biggs and Mark Starns on staff at Mason at the same time?

Fleming comes to Mason on January 22, 2013. If you don't think Coach Starns and Fleming will be fired up to beat Mason your not thinking right. This will be Coach Starns first game in the Fieldhouse since he left Mason. Mason has not lost to Fleming since 1999 District Tourney and has a 14 game winning streak.
