I think a large reason is due to how many classes there are now, but I also think some of it has to do with this explosion of fast, athletic offenses and not many teams are able to keep up defensively. To add onto that, there are times late in the game when teams realize that either they have or their opponent has nothing left in the tank and you see insurance points added on late in the game.
