The following are the boys basketball All Stars for the Northern Kentucky Cincinnati Enquirer, printed in the May 15 issue, and the Community Recorder newspapers, printed April 28. Look for the other sports in separate online files.

Player of the year

 

Ben Weyer, Newport Central Catholic:

The center was the Ninth Region and NKAC player of the year and led the Thoroughbreds to the state semifinals. He averaged 21.6 points and 11.4 rebounds a game and was a force on defense in blocked shots. Weyer was a Mr. Basketball finalist and will play for Bellarmine University next year.

Coach of the year

 

Ron Dawn, Newport Central Catholic: Directed the Thoroughbreds to a 30-5 record, 36th District and Ninth Region championships, and a berth in the state semifinals.

First team

 

Ben Weyer: Player of the year.

Matt Wilson, Campbell County: The senior center was the 10th Region player of the year and led the Camels to the 37th District championship. He averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds a year, and shot 64.6 percent from the floor. He was a finalist for Mr. Basketball. He will attend West Point and play basketball.

Jake Ohmer, Scott: The junior guard averaged 26 points per game and was first-team all-conference and all-10th Region. He set a single-game scoring record and the school’s career scoring record with a season still to go.

Cole VonHandorf, Covington Catholic: One of the top juniors in the state, he averaged 17 points per game and led the Colonels to a 28-7 record, 35th District championship, and a runner-up finish in the Ninth Region. First-team all-conference.

Sean McNeil, Cooper: Despite missing 11 games, the junior averaged 16 points a game and led Cooper to its best-ever record of 24-5. He was first-team all-NKAC.

Tyler Bezold, Holy Cross: The senior averaged 16 points a game for the Indians, who were 23-9 and made their first appearance in the Ninth Region Tournament since 2004. First-team all-conference.

Adam Goetz, St. Henry: The senior guard averaged 19 points per game and hit 32 3-pointers. First-team all-conference.

Markel McClendon, Holmes: The senior guard was first-team all-conference and averaged 19 points per game.

Ethan Snapp, Newport: The senior guard averaged 17.7 points per game for the Wildcats and hit 82 3-pointers. First team all-conference.

Michael Scott, senior, Conner: The senior averaged 17 points a game and led the Cougars to the 33rd District championship and a berth in the Ninth Region semifinals. Conner was 18-11. He was first-team all-NKAC.

Second team

 

Jackson Crawford, Bishop Brossart: The senior forward averaged 18 points per game for the Mustangs, who finished 19-8. First-team all-conference.

Adam Kunkel, Cooper: The sophomore guard averaged 15.3 points per game and hit 46 3-pointers for the 24-5 Jaguars. First-team all-conference.

Austin Fries, Simon Kenton: The senior forward was one of the top post players in the area for the 32nd District champion Pioneers. First-team all-conference.

Andy Flood, Covington Catholic: A versatile player for the Ninth Region runner-up Colonels, the senior averaged 10 points per game and was second on the team with 4.3 rebounds. First-team all-conference.

Spencer Hemmerich, Conner: The junior forward averaged 15 points per game for the Cougars, who were 33rd District champions and Ninth Region semifinalists. First-team all-conference.

Hunter Meyer, Dixie Heights: The athletic junior guard led the Colonels to a 19-11 record and 34th District championship. He averaged 11.5 points per game. First-team all-conference.

Luke Moeves, Newport Central Catholic: The junior averaged 12 points per game and hit 86 3-pointers. First-team all-conference. Had big Sweet 16 in NCC’s state semifinal run.

Brennan Hall, Newport Central Catholic: The sophomore guard averaged 12 points per game for the state semifinalists and was capable of taking over games, particularly in the All “A” Classic and Sweet 16 state tournaments. First-team all-conference.

Leighton Schrand, Holy Cross: The senior point guard led the Indians to a 23-9 record, averaging 15 points per game. First-team all-conference.

CJ Fredrick, Covington Catholic: The sophomore averaged 11 points per game for the Colonels and led the team in 3-point makes with 43. First-team all-conference.

Congratulations to everyone named to the team and those that may be deserving that were missed.

How could anyone possibly be "missing" on these teams? Everyone who participated within 100 miles of N.Ky. was name to this all-star squad. Talk about making everyone feel good about themselves. This is an example of giving participation medals if ever there was one. You had to be a JV player not to get mentioned on these all-star teams there are so many on it.

Now that I have read through the list, which took almost two days, I can actually see what this is. Not only is this the Enquirer Team, it also includes the top players that were chosen by all the local papers that go out, hence all the redundancy. Still a large list but a little easier to sift through.
