Why do most KHSAA football state championship games end in blowouts?

Featured Replies

I was doing some research and the average margin over victory in title games since 2007 is 22 points. The breakdown is as follows:

6A: 29 point average margin of victory

5A: 27 points

4A: 19 points

3A: 17 points

2A: 16 points

A: 23 points

Do we just chalk it up to the dominance of teams like Trinity, Highlands and Bowling Green? I have never been and would like to go one year but I live in Lexington and I don't want to drive 2.5 hours to sit in the freezing cold just to watch a blowout.

Any ideas as to why there are so many blowouts? Is it easy to predict whether games will be a blowout or close before these finals? I would like to pick out one of the six finals this year to attend that has a chance to be close.

I know at the basketball sweet 16 there are lots of neutral fans and it is a good atmosphere. Are the football finals mostly just small crowds made up of fans of those specific teams and not as many neutral fans?

Why are public schools like Highlands so dominant almost every single year? Coaching? Facilities? Emphasis of the youth football programs? others reasons?

I think a large reason is due to how many classes there are now, but I also think some of it has to do with this explosion of fast, athletic offenses and not many teams are able to keep up defensively.

To add onto that, there are times late in the game when teams realize that either they have or their opponent has nothing left in the tank and you see insurance points added on late in the game. Pikeville beat Beechwood 42-28, but it was tied at 21 at the end of the 3rd quarter

Six classes are probably the biggest reason. There isn't enough depth (championship contenders) many times and if those schools fall in the same side of the bracket you get lopsided finals. Curious what the average margins of state semifinals have been over the same period.

Just because it is the Championship doesn't mean it is the two best teams. Obviouslyt this is the chief reason. Sometimes the 4 or 5 best teams are beating each other earlier due to geography. Also styles of play just clash. Corbin played Belfry better than LexCath in 2015 but I would not expect Corbin to beat LexCath head to head. It's just LexCath did not match up to Belfry's style whatsoever.

I also think the finality of the game comes into play as well and affects the mental aspect. Teams really seem to get tight and self destruct a lot more. I remember games where teams just fumbled and bumbled into blowouts. The "Do or Die" aspect also comes into play where coaches break from their normal mode and throw the kitchen sink when they get down three or more scores. I remember that Fairview vs. Mayfield game where it was over in the First Quarter because Fairview could not hold on to the football. I also remember several Highlands games where the game was reasonable until about the middle of the Third Quarter and then became blowout city when teams tried forcing things.

Seed the playoffs and you will see a better slate of finals.

Travel would be terrible if they did that.

I guess Trinity's schedules in 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 made me numb to that.

what about seeding in the semifinals? I think Ohio does that now

Condense the Classes down to 3.

Put the privates and independent districts into two separate classes.

Big private (you're welcome for the name)

Trinity / X /BG / Higlands / Lex Cath / Cov Cath / Owesnboro

Small private:

There you are, I've missed you so.

They once had a blind draw that worked out similar to what you are referring to and low and behold far EKY Lawrence County on the W VA state line and Mayfield drew each other sending Lawrence County to play in Mayfield. A 6 hour drive 1 way. That ended that
