  1. There isn't a single team (1A to 6A) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky that has any business playing that big time Ohio D1 team in the regular season.
  2. Well said Hellbird, well said. Thanks for the post and the memories it brought back. Good luck and God's speed to all the players who will be snapping (or zipping) on a chinstrap this weekend.
  3. He played at Norwood High School in the late 70's. Then played at Miami University (Oxford) where he was a two-time All-American defensive tackle/nose guard. From 84-86 played for the Bengals, Bills and Calgary (CFL). After that hung up his cleats for wrestling shoes in the WCW and was best know as Flyn' Brian for signature leaps off the top rope of the ring. He passed away while in the WCW from an undetected heart condition that his father had passed away from years before.
  4. NDA's "starting" varsity keeper for the last two years graduated this past Spring. If there is a keeper at NDA not playing high school soccer this year she was not the "starting" varsity keeper in past years. NDA has lots of young talent and will continue to reload. As always formation and strategy to match the available talent will be key.
  5. My point exactly, the 3 front was much of the issue. The 4 front helped but the 3 front was the base defense taught and used at all levels.
  6. Not having any sentimental attachment to the previous shooting Colonel logo I really like the new logo especially if they re-brand all uniforms with it. I think it's a classic look and the cross in the middle of the C follows much of what they teach at CCH and that is keeping your faith at the center and core of everything you do.
  7. I've watched a lot of CCH football at multiple levels over the last few years and the defensive line had the same issues regardless of age group. I believe the perceived weakness of the defensive line had nothing to do with talent, they had and still have the talent. I believe the main issue was their defensive formation. It's my understanding the previous coaching staff required all teams from the top down to run a 3-5 defense. If everyone in the league ran a wide open spread offense that may have been a good defense to run, reality is they don't. This is high school football and at this level more than any you have to be able to do two things really well to be successful and that is run the ball and stop the run. Highlands and Trinity do these things really well hence part of the reason for their success. The 3-5 defense gives your opponent excellent blocking angles on the 3 down linemen and unless you have absolute beasts at those positions it makes it very easy for teams to use 1-on-1 blocking schemes. This frees up the rest of the blockers to attack the 2nd and 3rd levels of the defense which puts way too much pressure on the LB's in running situations. This only became worse IMO as CCH played better more physical teams. They attempted to help the situation with blitz and stunt packages which worked in some situations but if the opponent was well-coached and remained disciplined in their blocking assignments the effect was minimal. From what I saw in spring ball much of this is going to change and I believe for the better. This coaching staff starting at the top really seems to get it and I'm excited to see how they progress this season and into the future.
  8. Can anyone confirm the location, date, and time of this game?
  9. This thread isn't necessarily for this subject but we had a personal experience I wanted to share so maybe others would learn from it. Unfortunately it is true that some injuries just happen even with the proper training and protection. However, JOAT is correct in what you will hear from orthopedic surgeons when it comes to injuries caused by overuse syndrome, especially orthopedics that practice in the area of sports medicine. During my daughter's freshman to sophomore years she played soccer non-stop and at times for more than one team between club and ODP. Her shins were hurting off and on for a while but at the Regional ODP camp one of her shins was hurting so bad not even significant amounts of ibuprofen would ease the pain. We took her to an orthopedic who is also the team physician for Xavier women's athletics and after an MRI he found a stress fracture in her tibia. The orthopedic said the cause was very simple, overuse. I asked the same question about her only playing one sport. He said it wasn't the fact that she played only one sport but rather the fact that she was not giving her body enough time to rest and recover from the physical stress she was putting on it. He said stress fractures like hers happen when an overuse causes the muscles to fatigue and pull harder on the bone that is not getting enough time to replace itself and that's when the fracture occurs. He said it is also very common in long distance runners. Overuse issues can also cause micro tears in tendons leading to sprains (larger incomplete tears) and at times full complete tears. Again, the key is not to have your child play multiple sports back to back to back instead of one sport year around but rather ensure they are getting the proper rest and recovery time. The orthopedic also stressed the importance of (especially for female athletes) getting the proper calcium intake for bone replacement as well as the proper amount of strength training in the gym. He said the strength training helps protect against muscle fatigue while at the same time strengthens the tendon and bone connections. My daughter recovered very well and now takes calcium supplements everyday and has become a gym rat which also improved her play on the field. Her college coach puts a ton of emphasis on proper rest as well as strength training to prevent overuse injuries. The moral to the story is ensure your kids are getting the rest they need to recover, get proper nutrition and when they are old enough understand the importance of resistance/strength training. I hope this helps.
  10. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ram and family. Godspeed on your recovery Ram.
  11. Bobby Pifer was the Head JV and Assistant Varsity Coach under Sara McSorely at NDA up until last year when Sara stepped down after a very long and successful career at NDA. Coach Pifer is an awesome coach and even better person. He had a successful career at NDA head coaching several undefeated JV squads and assistant coaching multiple varsity State Championship teams. Congrats to Ryle on a great hire, they are very lucky to have him. I wish Coach Pifer all the luck in the world as Ryle's new head coach, except when they play NDA!:thumb:
  12. Congrats to Coach Ruthsatz and the Blue Colonels on winning your 2nd straight 9th Region Championship! You put on a clinic tonight in patience, focus and how to close out a game. Good luck at Rupp!
  13. Part of the press conference yesterday is linked to this article on Cincinnat.com. Solid interview, I like what I heard. Good luck Coach Eviston! 15. This why I hate posting on blogs and would rather discuss most issues on here in person over a beer. I actually don't think we are disagreeing on this. Like I said before freshmen like anyone else should have to EARN their time on the field. Typically for freshmen I'll agree that is toward the end of the season and I agree with a lot of what you said. I coached many years in Ohio at the high school level and in all that time only saw one kid who started as a freshman beginning about the third regular season game. He went on to play at a major D1 national power and later helped win a Super Bowl. Freshmen like that only come along maybe once in a decade. That said I believe we see it the same way just writing it differently. Again, if we were talking over a beer and not over a blog this would have been a two minute conversation with an AMEN brother at the end.
  16. You had me until #9. Never say never. Talent should always win over class status regardless of the school or the numbers. That doesn't mean you throw a freshman out there day one. The job and playing time should be the upperclassman's to lose and the freshman should have to earn their time on the field. As of the second part of #9 I couldn't disagree more. Asking your top freshmen to dress varsity regardless if they play or not is a good practice to have. It incentivizes those freshmen that have a desire to play varsity now or in the future. Even of they do not get any playing time it gives them the VALUABLE experience of being in that environment, especially on a Friday night in the playoffs at Johnson Central and Highlands. You have to be in uniform running on the field to truly experience those environments. You don't get the same experience in street clothes watching from the stands. If you do this with your top freshmen, the players you believe you'll be relying on in future years it helps desensitize them to those hostile environments and helps them focus on performing when you need them to perform and not be thinking about the craziness going on around them.
  17. I'm only able to give firsthand insight to your original question in #64. I'm a big fan of the basketball program but am not involved enough to speak to the coach's desires in that regard.
  18. Agreed. Coach Wirth was very clear about this issue with the players and parents from day one this season. He openly talked about the issue in the organizational meeting and encouraged the boys to play multiple sports. I believe his only request was for the players to communicate with their coaches regarding other sport commitments so they would know when not to expect them at football related off-season activities.
