  1. Highlands has used a TE rarely over the years. Even when Derrick Smith was there he might start out at TE but more times than not he would split out wide. I have watched Highlands TE's run free over the middle of the field and rarely be thrown the ball. Maybe this is the year that changes!
  2. I believe the last losing season for Highlands was 1955. My math says 61 years. Hmm...don't think one losing season in that length of time is reason for concern. I am an Alumni and proud of it. Is everything great? No it's not...because we did not win a State Championship. You see, that is the goal every year! Some quick math will tell you we have failed to achieve that goal more times than we have achieved it; but that has never stopped us from working toward it. Stop the noise; the 'Birds will be back! Maybe not to dominate like we did in the recent past but we will be back.
  3. If Dixie can run they can make it a game. If Cov Cath turns that off the fat lady can start singing "Turn off the lights..."
  4. I was more impressed with SK's tandem of Racke and Shearer but Morgan is very good. Should be fun.
  5. Good pictures. Really a nice game on both sides of the ball. Conner's QB was a good runner and #12 had a really strong game as a WR and a safety. Highlands used some great imagination in their play calling. Congrats to all.
  6. Very humbling. It is also embarrassing not to see an effort to correct the defensive side of the ball. The last halftime correction I remember was the second half of the last game in 2014. Except for that half the sweep has been an unaddressed issue for at least three years.
  7. Wow! If SK wins on Friday they will be 3-25 all time against the Birds!
  8. I have been watching Highlands since 1956. They did not win every year but they have been competitive. They will be back and they won't dodge competition. Dale was an exceptional coach and a great motivator but people need to give Brian an opportunity to be his own guy and not be compared to Dale every time the Birds take a loss. We may take a loss to SK on Friday. I wonder what that will make the Birds all time against SK?
  9. Looking forward to next week!
  10. Dale Mueller was an outstanding coach and is an outstanding man; what he brought to the program places him on a plane with Homer Rice as the pinnacle of coaches at Highlands. Let's not sell Brian Weinrich short; give him some time to put his stamp on the program as the head guy. We tend to forget he was the assistant head coach during the latter part of Dale's tenure. It is all about the kids and their dedication and motivation. I have been watching Highlands play for 60 years and from what I saw at St. X on Friday night they will show up to play on Friday night.
  11. Great job by Pulaski. #2 was a huge difference maker for the Maroons. Awesome performance young man. We wish you and your team success.
  12. Really a nice comeback to form for the Birds. These kids were 1-5 and being beat down by everyone but have rallied to have a good team and a chance to go all the way again. Terrific job guys! Play hard and get'er done!!!
  13. Go Birds. Silence the doubters. This is our time of year! Nobody gave us a chance down 42-21 at half last year. Ok we started 1-5. Let's finish with a couple of more W's.
  14. Birds need to come out and play hard.
  15. It was a good win. Liked the grit Highlands showed and the fact that Hergott was put in a position to succeed. I saw the earlier matchup predictions but not sure they will be as posted. If Montgomery beats Anderson they end up on the top side of the bracket and play Grant Co with the winner getting the Highlands-Woodford winner. We will see Friday. Nice thing this year is if Highlands keeps winning they keep playing in Fort Thomas right through until Bowling Green. Go Birds. (Hey coach, how about working on a screen play for Pulsfort? The kid has good wheels!)
  16. Highlands 59-61 Teams were quarterbacked by Roger Walz and he was flat out amazing all three years. The running backs in that same period were both Burt's, Jim and John who were both all time candidates. Wide receivers Jim Biltz and Bill Bradley who both played at lonesome end as sophomores in 61 should also garner some votes. Homer Rice laid the groundwork for all of the success since the mid 50's.
  17. This game does not dictate the season. Get real folks. You schedule tough competition to prepare. The season does not hinge on a game when a 5A school plays a game against any other class. Do you want to win? Absolutely. Is the sky falling? Absolutely not.
  18. 2001 AND 2002. Back to back same 2 schools.
  19. Birds were embarrassed at Cooper. Cooper was emotionally charged. Birds back on track.
  20. I have attended a lot of football games over the last sixty years; i am really looking forward to September 25th! How many times can one say that going up an opponent that has an all time record against you of 1-25? That is a testimony to the way SK has improved; I am curious as to how much.
  21. Marty Steele is the Head Coach at Boone as of Thursday March 26th.
