I would love to hear from people who know Highlands football (not just people trying to stir the pot) why they don't use a TE. The easy answer is "they don't have the personnel", but kids know they don't use one, so the "bigger" guys don't prepare themselves as they come up in the feeder system. Any insight? Is it truly personnel or a lack of belief in the need for one from the coaches?

They rather go with 4 receivers and spread the field SK does the same thing.

I can't answer that but I do have one problem with your theory.

 

Young big kids never "plan" on being a TE in youth ball. They're either big and they turn them into OL or they can run a bit and can catch a bit so they turn them into a TE. Kids are not determining their future position in youth ball.

They may not have used a Tight End in recent years. The last one I can think of is Nick True. Granted, Cam'Ron Johnston said he would play that position if he did not become the starting QB. Of course, that didn't happen. Nick was 6-5 and very muscular so they took advantage of his abilities as a blocker and receiver. I do not see why new Offensive Coordinator Zach Deaton and staff would not use one if it would add to their offensive arsenal.

They moved True to tackle his Senior year.

Highlands planned to use Jack Telek at tight end in 2014. But he got injured for the year in the first scrimmage against Trinity.

But Nick True did play Tight End as a junior in 2012. I remember him catching a TD pass against Mason County that year.

Probably more of a schematic choice rather than a"lack of". A TE also brings an extra defender into the box. Spread offenses tend to make it easier to dictate were blitzes are coming from. Not that you can't be a spread with a TE in the game. Boils down to preference when play calling.

I used to feel the same way as a play caller. But I learned that it's actually easier to dictate to a defense and open up your passing game if you have a TE in the game vs out. It's also better for your run game. All in all, if you have one, TE's are the way to go. Plus, you can still flex him and get a 4 wide look.

Nothing other than choosing not to use on I would guess. They've been successful without one in the grand scheme.

Mop up TD is all that was likely as he may have had 5 balls thrown to him all season. The Birds simply do not throw the ball down the middle unless its a Post Bomb.

How many high school teams throw to a TE? Not that many IMO.

About the only 2 teams I seen this past year use a FB was Dixie and Scott.
