Highlands lack of using a TE

Featured Replies

If I was going to use any kid as a TE it would probably be Max Diering 6'3 220, Logan Aubrey 5'11 200, Korbyn Poole 6'1 210 or Trent Johnson 6'2 200.

And that is based upon what exactly? Oh I see, because they have a weight listed of greater than 200 pounds.

One guy was asked to move to a different position last year for the good of the team and that did not happen.

Well I wouldn't use a kid that weighs 160 pounds.

Nor would I, but again everyone is jumping the gun to think that Highlands is even going to use a tight end in the first place. IMO, use of a TE would indicate a strong desire to run the football more than I throw it and I just do not see that happening, at least not this year.

Very true.

I played Trent Johnson as a TE. He absolutely destroyed LB's and caught a lot of TD passes. We motioned him to and away from plays also. His interception for a TD as a freshman was JJ Watt like against Camels. Being a catcher for baseball also tells you he has great hands.

Austin King is listed 6'1 165 as a WR and Nate Roberts 6'2 180 as a WR.

I know the kid personally and he is 180lbs as of today. He and Roberts are both very similar in size but Roberts is a little taller. Like I said, he would be a great option either at TE or in the slot.

The one game last year that Highlands used a tight end, it was indeed Trent Johnson who was used. He played on both sides of the ball on the line wearing #65. His number was changed for the game he played tight end.

Just a question in general. If you are throwing team, is it worth having a TE if you are only going to look at him 2-3 times a game, which might equate to one catch, maybe the odd game with a couple of catches? Unless you are looking to throw to the middle of the field at the TE several times a game, or are a power running team and the TE is essentially another big blocker, is a TE needed? And I ask that being a big fan of the TE position myself, but I am now so far removed from football I consider myself not much more than a novice (if that) when it comes to the technical aspects of todays game.

I think having a TE presents the problem for the defense of having another gap to cover in the run game as well as a target in the passing game. To me, it is unsound to never have a TE. I am not saying that a TE should be used every snap, but if nothing else, it helps in short yardage situations. In fact, I believe that it is also helpful to use 2 TE's at times in such situations.

I humbly disagree. At this level as a defender I feel like my athlete is better than your athlete at TE. So if you're going to bring a TE in the box you make it easier on me especially if I'm playing an odd defense. You just brought "usually" my best defender back in the box. Look at #27 from BG high school. Would you rather have that beast coming from the slot or off the end of the LOS, Where your TE can't block him anyways? Imo now the offense is playing 10 on 11 with and added defender in the box.

I see so many teams get stuffed in short yardage situations by not having a TE and having defenders screaming off the edge unblocked and blowing up the run game. Even pass-happy teams like the NE Patriots get into multiple TE formations at times. The key to me is to have answers for situational football. In my opinion, teams that never use a TE do not have answers for certain situations. Short yardage, goal line, coming off the goal line, 4-minute offense, etc. I have no problem with offenses spreading it out. I just don't think it is sound to only do that. Just like I don't think it is sound to always play with 2 TE's.

I'm sorry but most high school teams don't have 6'6 gronk roaming the middle of fields. But you are correct, it comes down to play calling and preference. But if I'm not a pound it out off tackle power team, option, outside zone type of team, then I'm not bringing that extra defender in the box. I'm doing what Highlands has done well for years and make your defenders prove that they can consistently tackle in space. I personally don't think it's a "lack" of TE, I think it's a choice not to use one.

I agree with you that it is a matter of preference of whether or not to use one. To me, these situations come down to being able to win close games. If the games are not close (like most were not in the Highlands recent run), then it really does not matter. If you are blowing a team out, it does not matter if you get stuffed in short yardage occasionally.
