  1. The new head coach will only be as good as the staff around him. If they have fired the entire staff, this means that the new coach will have to bring in a new staff. Is the administration willing to hire assistant coaches as teachers. Most are not willing to do this. This could backfire on the football program. Unless he gets his new assistants teaching jobs in the school, are they going to be willing to drive 30 minutes to coach football every day?
  2. GREAT POINT !!! The coaches are both "boone county" guys and they run the football. As i said earlier, only difference is Elliot! A couple years ago, the only difference was Ferris.
  3. My stance is this: I dont have have a dog in the fight. I have a problem with someone airing their opinion about the Boone football program when they only attended two games. The only ones who should make this decision are those close to the program. Thompson is a good football coach who had a bad year. It is just too much of a copout to say that Ryle has a better program than Boone. What Ryle has is Travis Elliot. I saw Boone play 3 times and they almost pulled off the upset over Ryle. Game was closer than score. I love the game and you hear every great coach in college and the nfl say - the key to winning is playing great defense, having the ability to run the football and lastly, eliminate mistakes and turnovers. Not one poster has mentioned a word about how many yards and points were given up this year. So I guess I have an issue with the REASONS why a change is needed. I hope Thompson sticks around, finds a better way stop his opponent, and then lets that prehistoric offense do what they need to do!
  4. Boone was a good football team that didnt win as many games as it should have. It is puzzling that they started off with two wins against two pretty good football teams in Henry Clay and Scott County. After lackluster performances to Anderson to Highlands, they kind of fell apart. Maybe its coaching. Maybe its the effort of the players. Who knows? Some of the things being said here are rationalized and some are not. Many teams both in high school and in college win with Thompson's style of offense (Louisville St. X, Winsconsin, Alabama, just to name a few). His run first mentality does work. He did have a good offensive line, and he did have a great running back in Openheimer, and he did have a big TE. The reason that most coaches go to the spread is because they DONT have those types of players. Now obviously the results werent what Boone expected, but he more than likely did what he believed was best. Now should their be gripes about the QB situation, probably! Thompson has some pretty qualified coaches out there and they are good at what they do. They have been pretty productive in recent years with the same coaches and philosophy. As far as comparing to Ryle, Ryle will probably be in the same boat as Boone in past years - getting beat by the big Louisville teams.
  5. In 2004, Ben Guidugli of Highlands (now at UC and maybe will play in the NFL) had 16 catches for 343 yds. They won state that year. For 15 games, that's an average of about 1 reception per game.
  6. I think its funny that you have attended a couple games, and you think that Boone needs a new coach. I can understand you being disgruntled if you played, or your son played, or you go to every game, but really?
  7. Lloyd - Devin Pinkelton, RB Dixie - Jason Hodge, DL Kevin Hergott - Highlands, RB Mike Flesch - CCH, OL Galen Healey - CCH, RB
  8. I think its great that Coach chimed in on the thread. Good luck with your program! Go Tigers!
  9. Have you seen Dixie's weight room? When Coach Spritzky first started, it was an empty classroom. Now it is not much bigger.
  10. Since when doesnt Highlands have great facilities? That stadium is a fantastic place to play football. Great environment! Big screen TV! Great crowd! Club seating on the school side! Come on! Defenders cannot contact receivers who are "in route". Once they "break" into their route, the contact is off limits. Those hits were helmet to helmet and it is a shame that the referee didnt throw the flag when he was right there to call it. If we fire coaches who cannot beat Highlands, there will be no more high school football.
  11. Two good teams that played very hard. Very entertaining. Shame that fans have to criticize coaches and players. The true differene was that Dixie had about 13-14 players playing the game on both sides of the ball. Highlands had 22-26 payers playing only one way. They were fresher in the second half. I dont think it was a tale of being outcoached. In the end, the best team with the most talent won. Congrats Highlands. Although there were a few late hits and personal fouls, I thought the kids showed alot of class on both sides afterwards as many of them talked and congregated on the field for quite some time.
  12. Highlands - Marty Moore Cov Cath - Mike Woolf 2 of the best LBS ever in NKY Beechwood RBs: Tacket, Sieman, Moorlidge, Berger, Williams, Johnson, Vocke, Bankamper, etc, etc, etc. Highlands RB - a ton of them, but Frisk was the best !
  13. Who owned the original record of 574 yards? With that said, I will assume those yards were not gained in a tight game either.
  14. Bobby Leonard had 5 receptions, 133 Yds, 2 td receptions, one deflected pass on the goal line, one INT, punt return for 30 yds, and i think a blocked PAT - oh, and one great block that spring the game clinching TD in the fourth quarter.
  15. Holmes came to play tonight. They are much improved and will do fine in 4A as the season progresses. There are alot of IFs for the Dixie haters above. IMO if Pike doesnt throw the interception that was returnd to the 1 yd line, this game could have been ugly early. Holmes did a great job of stopping dixie's run early but Dixie clearyly dominated the 4th quarter by running the football. Chickenhawk, how can you say pike's night was average? He played a brilliant first half except for the int. The #11 wide receiver is going to write his own ticket for college. Great hands and great speed.
  16. I'd like say to that Coach Glaser is one of the finest coaches and gentlemen in the state of KY. St. X is fortunate to have had him coach and lead their football program. If the offense is so predictable, how come they win and win and win and win? The guy can flat out coach and their program is a model for every program in KY to follow.
  17. How has football really changed? Other than the shotgun and the ability of QBs to be running and passing threats, the game has not changed at all. Their only so many places you can run to and passing concepts you can utilize. You beat your opponent with your Jimmys and Joes, not your xs and os. Trust me, Coach Mueller could run any offense or defense and he'd be undefeated. As for now, Coach Thompson is the only coach you have. They do not have the talent on their roster to compete with a quality NKY schedule.
  18. Coach Thompson knows the game of football. Whether or not he is using his assets accordingly is up for debate? Some of the above want a spread offense but if the QB is throwing two int's in 6 attempts last night, then imagine what he might do if he threw it 25 times? Be careful what you wish for. Openheimer is a great running back, but they do not have the OL that they have had in past years. Maybe he is doing the best with what he has. He has proven his ability to coach in previous years. Go back and look up the archive scores on KHSAA and see the points BC was putting up on NKY opponents between 2003 thru 2008. Maybe he didnt beat Trinity, but who really has? Coach Thompson is comfortable coaching his style of offense, not the spread. He is going to be more successful coaching what he knows.
  19. ky, I agree with you and think NCC may not lose a game from here on out. They are physical upfront and their skill positions will be better than most they face. Coach Eviston has added a few wrinkles this year offensively and their defense is always disciplined and well coached. Aug 20, 10 Dixie Heights 35 - 28 (W) Aug 27, 10 Aiken, OH home 44 - 6 (W) Sep 3, 10 Madison Central home 45 - 3 (W) Sep 10, 10 Ryle away 7 - 27 (L) Sep 17, 10 Campbell County away 7:30 PM Sep 24, 10 Covington Catholic home 7:00 PM Oct 1, 10 Newport away 7:00 PM Oct 8, 10 Holy Cross (Covington) away 7:00 PM Oct 22, 10 Lloyd Memorial home 7:00 PM Oct 30, 10 Beechwood home 7:00 PM
  20. Beechwood has slipped the last few years. In the 90's and even a few years ago, they had lines that averaged 6'3 and 260 pounds. The line the last few years have been closer to the 6'0 and 200 pound range. Beechwood is still good but their size will prevent them from beating the CCH's and Dixies like they use to. This has nothing to do with coaching. They will always contend in Class A and I tip my hat to Coach Rash for having the schedule that he has. Beechwood use to get out of district kids from Erlanger, Florence, etc and they just dont get the number of kids like they use to. I would argue that Covington Catholic does not get the numbers of kids from those areas either and that is why their talent has fallen off over the years. I think that the economy plays a huge part in this and families see that you their kids can attend a school like Ryle and be apart of a great program and get an education for free. In addition, their families can live in a nice home for less.
  21. I am just curious. Do college basketball players play "summer or fall" or "select" basketball between seasons? Or do their coaches build a 52 week program for their players? I ask this because i think high school coaches (not football coaches) simply hand off their athletes to the select teams and the off-season becomes a "play as many games as possible" off-season. Is there proof that "playing more games" is the best way to improve in basketball, baseball or soccer? I think there is alot of proof out there that the off-season strength and conditioning is a prerequisite for in-season football success. Thank God there is not an AAU or Select football season or 7 on 7 season; that certainly would ruin the game. If there was Select football, when would true development of the athlete occur?I am a believer that there is a season for all sports and that there is an offseason for sports where physical development can take place. I just dont think that we can prove that 30-40 more practices during the summer or spring can equate to in-season success with football.
  22. I would agree 100% with this. I just think that sports has turned into a monster. There use to be a sports "season" and now it is year round. it is great to let kids have an opportunity to improve but i really wonder how many kids truly love the time they have to commit to their sport. Some do, but some dont. I honestly think there would be a great big silent sigh of relief if spring ball was canceled. The coaches would be upset but my advise is to be a better coach with the time that you are allowed. I also know that about 1% of these kids are going to play college athletics and when they stick to that one sport, they lose out on the opportunity to participate in other sports. How would all of the posters in favor of spring ball feel about khsaa adopting a fall baseball season during September? Imagine the kids having to leave football practice and head to the batting cages. I know coaches have to fight AAU and Select programs, but it would be a more difficult challenge if it was high school fall ball.
  23. It looks like they ran it pretty well against Lloyd: 227 total. 48 Eric Sowder 5 25 0 12 Cy Smith 17 138 1 32 Michael Mueller 1 4 0 44 Blake Kennedy 6 13 0 22 Camron Fogle 2 1 1 14 Drew Barker 3 48 1
  24. With this proposal, a program could: a. practice the last three weeks of May in full gear. b. practice in helmets/cleats all summer long until around August 1 (minus the dead period) c. practice full gear from around August 1 until November or when the season is finished. In a nutshell a football player could practice from the second week of May until November. Coaches would have about 11-12 weeks to prepare for Game 1. How is this good? When is too much too much? My proposal would be: a. No spring football b. No instruction until July 9. c. Weights and conditioning only from the end of season until beginning of dead period. d. Full gear August 1 or x amount of days prior to first day of school.
