I like four.

Was told by an athletic director from NKY that a survey was sent to all ADs asking how they would vote for a return to four classes.

 

Anyone else have any news or insight on this?

I've not heard anything, but most ADs will ask their coaches. I would say we are staying with 6 classes. I do remember a survey about playoffs not long ago though, but dont recall anything about class change.

They should make T and ST X field 2 teams.

5 is too many also. 6 is way too many. 4 is perfect for Kentucky. Maybe 4+ a "super class" ( the 16 biggest schools in KY.).

I would say 4 is the best, if not 3. 6 ensures many undeserving champions, 5 still has a few. 4 would eliminate (for the most part) undeserving champions. 3 would ensure that every champion is deserving, but I extremely doubt we will ever see 3 classes.

 

Its wrong to say any team who has won a State Championship is undeserving. They have to play by the rules that they are allowed to play, and by the way things are set up now. Those teams are State Champions and have deserved it. Some of these teams that people may say are underserving may have still been able to win it, if it was not as many classes. We will never know, which is why every champion as deserved it and it is wrong to say otherwise.

 

If you want to say it was harder to win it back when it was 4 classes, then yes I would agree with that.

I don't think that any of these changes would occur before the 2014 cycle of contracts. The main reason is that too much work went into redistricting and getting that done correctly. The other thing to think about is the $ and kickbacks that KHSAA gets from having 4 additional teams, fans, and just common football fans in hotels and dining establishments during two or three nights in Bowling Green. There is a reason that a town makes a "bid" to host championships.

I can't believe many, be it BGP'er, coach, or AD would want to lessen the number of classes, unless there is a benefit for their team, or they are presently associated with or support a team who gets far into the playoffs year in and year out.

I say 24 classes so that we can quadruple the number of state champs. That would be great for the kids.

Let's really think this through and try to figure out how many classes there should be and why.

 

One Class - Is there anyone out who thinks we should just have one class like basketball? We could carve the state up into 32 district and only the district champ gets into the playoffs. That would appease everyone who thinks there are too many teams in the playoffs and that undeserving teams get into the playoffs. No one could say a playoff team didn't earn their way into it with the one class system. And talk about great playoff games - wow. There would be some great ones. What's wrong with going to one class?

 

Two Classes - OK, so maybe one class is a little too extreme. Let's make it two. If you are making it two to give smaller schools a chance at a title, then maybe we put the smallest 25% of schools in one class and the other 75% in the other. Or maybe you think the really big schools just have too much of a competitive advantage. In that case we could put the biggest schools in a class by them selves and let the rest of the state fight it out. So how many schools should be in the "super class" - 16, 32, 64?

 

Three Classes - This seems like a really good number. Put the smallest schools in one class and the biggest schools in another and let all the schools in the middle fight it out. Let's say we put 64 in the class on each end and let the rest of the schools go at it. A lot of schools in the middle wouldn't make the playoffs but you have to earn that playoff spot, right? What's wrong with with just going with 3 classes? Why are 4 classes better than 3?

 

Four Classes - This seems to be a popular number. I assume it is all the traditionalists who are used to 20 years or so of 4 class football. It sure is hard when things change. Should it just be split 4 ways equally? Should the big school class be divided into the state group and the Louisville group like it was for so many years? What is it about 4 classes that everyone likes? Do you like seeing teams not make the playoffs? Is it just because that is the way it always was or is there a reason?

 

Five Classes - This version seems to be favored by the four class lovers who want the big schools broken into a smaller super class. So all the arguments in favor of 4 classes should also apply here.

 

Six Classes - Let's see ... virtually everyone makes the playoffs (sort of like the NCAA basketball tournament); there aren't enough early round challenging playoff games; a couple champions aren't deserving according to some; the season is too long; some teams supposedly don't even want to be in the playoffs; some schools supposedly lose money due to playoff expenses; what else is wrong with 6 classes? For those who favor 6 classes, it gives more small schools a fair opportunity to win a title; all schools have incentive to play hard all year and work to get better knowing they get a second chance in the playoffs; you have fewer meaningless games during the season; what else in favor of 6 classes?

 

Contemplate, and debate.

Maybe put the privates in one class, the county schools in another and the rest of the schools in a third? Does that work for you?
