I believe schools cannot survive with this 6 class system due to financial reasons. Currently people are having to do much more traveling for district and playoff games and schools are strapped for cash. If something is not done I think you will see some schools having to drop the sport and this would be awful. 4 Classes is a must but Im not convinced it will change.

 

Nope. Don't buy it. As long as school are traveling every year to Coco Beach to play baseball for two weeks, and traveling all over the state to play basketball in Holiday Tournaments, they can travel for three district football games.

Ram, you are spot on. Furthermore, if the schools were so financially strapped that they couldn't afford to keep football under a 6 class system, why would the principals have voted in favor of the first two rounds of the playoffs being inter-district (playing teams from another district) as opposed to intra-district (playing schools from within the district to first determine a district champion that would have to travel in the third round)? Inter-district competition is much more expensive yet the principals voted in favor of it, which leads me to believe money isn't tight enough to shut down football programs.

I like 3 classes but that makes it tough for the small schools. 4 classes is probably Best. Right now Its a joke, its like playng in the YMCA league where Everyone gets a ribbon not to mention the season is way too Long. Play the Finals the day after Turkey Day, not 2 weeks before Santa comes.

Thats funny I thought Highlands played the 2010 finals on the 9th of December which is 16 days from the 25th.....almost 2 weeks. Regardless, football shouldnt go into December period.

You might be right with that. It seems like there were a couple years within the last 5 or so where they were either played on the 2nd weekend or still the 1st weekend, but that it happened to be in that 7,8,9th dates.

Basketball shouldn't be allowed to play 768 games vs outside competition in June, either. A whole 3 months after most of their previous regular season(s) end.

 

Back to the topic, I miss the old days of 4.

Seems somewhat contradictory Westsider, doesn't it? I mean if alot of schools wanted easier routes, then how would the "everyone else is in four classes" ever pass? Less classes, more difficult routes, correct? Just trying to understand how it could go back to four if the schools voted. :idunno:

I suspect a lot of the old 4A schools would be in support of it ... no Trinity and St. Xavier in the same class. A lot of us feel that the entire system was changed because of those two schools.

I say go back to 4 classes and let the same old teams always win the championships.

You are correct. One season a few years ago started late and ended the second weekend in December. I'm not sure if that was a KHSAA decision or if the calendar fell weird. It reverted back to normal the next year.

Takes alot more money to provide for 50-60 kids then it does 10-15.

Also long road trips are hurting your gate.

I think the outcome of a vote would be determined by who is voting. If it's the football coaches, it would never go back to 4 classes and probably not even 5. If it's the ADs voting, then I think the outcome would be determined by what sport had the more influence on the ADs (basketball or football). Same goes with the Principals voting.

 

I'd venture a guess that a majority of basketball coaches and basketball supporters want the number of classes shrunk. The fewer the classes, the more schools that are quickly eliminated from the playoffs and the sooner the two way players can turn in the pads and pick up the roundball. Same reason they'd like to see the championship games played earlier. Which I think is the real motivation for some to be in favor of lessening the number of classes.

You really think schools are strapped for cash due to football teams having to travel to 5-6 games a year? If you want to know what straps athletic budgets as far as travel is concerned, look no further than boys and girls basketball, baseball/softball, boys/girls soccer, & every other non-revenue sport. Football and boys basketball are the the only revenue generating sports at high schools and I hardly think 5-6 football road games are draining the budget.

 

Yes they are the only ones providing the revenue and thats why schools cannot afford to lose any money on these trips. Also hurts the gate on these road trips.
