That was the best game (10 Regional final GRC vs Mason County) I had ever witnessed until last years 9th Region final (Dixie vs NCC). Two of the best high school games ever.

 

Not to thread jack but I'm going with the best 9th region finals ever was when Deron Blasingame from Highlands, hit the game winning jumper against NCC as time expired at Conner in 1987. Talk about crazy!!!

Does Clay County still have their original gym. I kind of thought it was an interesting place to watch a game.

Conner also hosted the 9th finals when Conner hit a jumper from the elbow to beat Holy Cross in 1993.

I believe the old Tiger Den is now a middle school gym. It was nearly impossible to beat Bobby Keith's teams in that gym back in the day. It had a lot of "personality", but not for the visiting teams, lol.

The one Ashley narrated? "Great Balls Of Fire?"

 

Ashley Judd did narrate it, but I believe it was called "Bluegrass Basketball." Great Balls of Fire was a KET documentary about high school basketball in Kentucky.

The Season: Kentucky Bluegrass Basketball (2004) Narrated by Ashley Judd. It was an ESPN production and no longer available. Focused on High School basketball in Ky and was very well done. One used copy is available on Amazon.

Although I like the Arena at Montgomery County, I have some great memories from the Barn in the 70s. Packed houses with Montgomery, Bath, Clark, and Mt. Sterling at district tournament time. The bands in the corners playing as loud as they could. At one point, I remember Montgomery County switched to a jazz band with a brass section, electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums. Awesome atmosphere!

Although it was always a rough trip and you had to take all your valuables with you into the gym, I think one of the most interesting I've ever been to is at Oneida Baptist Institute. A word of warning for those who haven't been there, don't eat too much before going cause the roads are VERY unforgiving on the stomach...lol.

 

Another interesting one from the film Ashley Judd narrated was the gym on the stilts at Red Bird Mission School...Coach Wilson has done an unbelievable job in that school for what is afforded him...great man too.

Yes. As far as I know the side goals have always been there. They were there when I played in the 70s.

 

I cannot remember the year that it happened, but this is also pictures of the remodeled "Barn". The "Barn" I played in did not have the red/blue bleachers. The bleachers were the same color as the floor which gave the gym a greenish yellow tint when you walked in

In the mountains.... Knott County Central. Old hanging scoreboard in the middle. Tons of seating.

 

Clay County and Perry County Central have some really nice gyms as well. Haven't seen the new Harlan County gym in person, but the pictures look spectacular. Watched the 2001 Regional Tournament in the dome at Cawood and thought it was quite a unique place.

Of the Lexington schools, Henry Clay definitely has the uniqueness and nostalgic feel. A bit of the same for Tates Creek & Lafayette, but the parking situation at Lafayette was horrible last time I was there.

campbell county's middle school and high school gyms have a lot to offer... and i can't wait to see the new facilities at the high school...
