Didn't Rex Chapman win the "Sweet Sixteen", his Senior year??

 

I don't believe so. Unless I'm mistaken Apollo didn't even get out of distrist as they were beaten by Owensboro in 3OT. Rex had 45 in the losing effort. Probably one of the best high school games ever played at the Sportscenter. People were packed in like sardines.

From Pendleton Co what about any of the Griffins? I know Bob went on to play at NKU? I'd love to hear about some of the Griffs.

 

Bobby played on the 71 team that went to state, but he was not even the best player on that team. There was no great players on that team, but they all played team ball.

Boone County's best was Allen "The Horse" Feldhouse! Played for Rupp at UK, haven't seen anyone close in the past 40 years.

Having played against the old St Thomas High School I remember a fellow by the name of Phil Hanson who could flat out play. Tremendous outside shot and when he got you to start playing up on him he would drive the baseline and leave you in his dust.

 

The man was Phil HASSON...and every thing you say is correct! He never met a shot he wouldn't take! :lol: Played with some other standouts: Carl "Milt" Hafele, Matt "Gabby" Giesler, Todd Bender and was coached by the legend Kenny Shields. These guys at St. T also had "Jumpin' Johnny Messmer and current coaching icon Mike Listerman on staff. Used to play at St. T with the crowd surrounding the court...what atmosphere!

If you had to pick the best ever as the thread states who would it be? I only saw him play once but my choice would Draud. Any argument there?

Bardstown - James "Boo" Brewer in the late 80's and later of UofL fame, was probably the most electric.

Apollo made it to Rupp in either '85 or '86. I believe Rex may have broken his wrist during his Sr. season. Rex and Reggie Hanson sat in the row in front of me during one of the tournament games. I was very excited at the time.

From SK I would say T. Mckinley, J. Krohman, M. Brock and Dave Obel would have to be considered. Obel still owns the single season rebound average for the state at 19/game.

I'm pretty sure that Jimmy "the bus driver" Gregg was the leading scorer on the 71 regional chamion team. I know for a fact that he was Pendleton's leading scorer in the state game against Owensboro.

His picture/jersey hang in the hallway of the gym and it's the only one there so I guess Scott is "da' man". But to really be fair, you gotta pick "Players of the Decade". The game and rules change so much.

Probably the best player on the 71 team was Jerry Wright.

At Breathitt, the most talented player I ever watched was Johnny Stacy, but the player I'd actually want on my team was Scott Moore. That's from about '87-present. I can't speak for the years before that, but I know we've had some pretty good ones.

You'l need to go back a few years to find the best players ever from Breathitt County. IMO, it would be between one the following :

 

"Big" Earl Stevens....The 6'7 center is still a legend in Breathitt County. Took the Bobcats to the state tournament all four years he played. Would have probably won the 1962 title if he hadn't broke his leg and didn't play.

 

 

Larry Noble.....His 1967 team nearly won the state championship. They lost in the semifinals to eventual champ Earlington after leading for most of the game. The Bobcats finished something like 37-2 that year. Some at the semifinal game said it wasn't exactly the best called game in the world. One former player told me it was the only time he had ever seen Coach Farice Woods cry after a game. The 6'5 Noble went on to star for Austin Peay.

 

 

Arch Johnson......His team played in the state tournament in the early '70's. Won the first game in the tournament over Covington Catholic when Philip Lovely hit a last second shot. The 6'6 Johnson could play point guard if called on, but usually played the 2 or 3 spot. He went on to a stellar career at Morehead State after being courted by the Kentucky Wildcats the same year they signed Kevin Grevey, Jimmy Dan Conners, Mike Flynn, and Bob Guyette. One of his visits to UK was with that group, and the Barnstable twins, who were UK cheerleaders, were their tour guides around campus. But in the end he decided on an All-Conference career at Morehead State.
