O.K. boy I know this is before you think life existed but Pendleton had a fellow named Rick Elrod who was an outstanding player and even made an appearance in the NBA if I'm not mistaken. Is son is currently on Pendletons team this year.

 

I am not sure if he made an appearance in the NBA, but he was drafted by the Phoenix Sun I believe. His son is Jon Elrod on the PC team.

You'l need to go back a few years to find the best players ever from Breathitt County. IMO, it would be between one the following :

 

"Big" Earl Stevens....The 6'7 center is still a legend in Breathitt County. Took the Bobcats to the state tournament all four years he played. Would have probably won the 1962 title if he hadn't broke his leg and didn't play.

 

 

Larry Noble.....His 1967 team nearly won the state championship. They lost in the semifinals to eventual champ Earlington after leading for most of the game. The Bobcats finished something like 37-2 that year. Some at the semifinal game said it wasn't exactly the best called game in the world. One former player told me it was the only time he had ever seen Coach Farice Woods cry after a game. The 6'5 Noble went on to star for Austin Peay.

 

 

Arch Johnson......His team played in the state tournament in the early '70's. Won the first game in the tournament over Covington Catholic when Philip Lovely hit a last second shot. The 6'6 Johnson could play point guard if called on, but usually played the 2 or 3 spot. He went on to a stellar career at Morehead State after being courted by the Kentucky Wildcats the same year they signed Kevin Grevey, Jimmy Dan Conners, Mike Flynn, and Bob Guyette. One of his visits to UK was with that group, and the Barnstable twins, who were UK cheerleaders, were their tour guides around campus. But in the end he decided on an All-Conference career at Morehead State.

I've heard a lot about Johnson and Stevens. I figured Breathitt had had a few better than the two I listed, but I can only talk about what I've seen.

Here's the scoop on Jimmy Hammondfrom Falmouth High School.He graduated in 1962.He was about 6ft.4in. and about 230lbs. he averaged about 25 a game and was one of the best rebounders ever in the region. he currently lives in Falmouth and is a friend of mine . And yes he was very good!!!

And you need to listen to your Dad. He sounds like a smart man. Jordan probably was the best player to play in your lifetime but in my lifetime there was a fellow named Oscar Robertson who might just have something to say about Mr Jordan. the "Big O" averaged a triple-double for an entire season. :thumb:

 

That he did, but he also only won one championship, and that was with the help of Adbul-Jabaar. Jordan morphed his game as his body aged. He was one of the greatest defensive 2 guards of all time to go along with having the highest scoring average of all-time. Big O was 6'4 and thick, but Jordan was Jordan. My dad is friends with Cowens, so I've always had an interest with basketball history. You really can't go wrong, but I'd go with Jordan in his prime.

Richie Farmer won a state championship for Clay County. Now, Richie could really shoot for a High Schooler, and of course he went on and played for U.K.!!!

Simon Kenton 1981 State Championship Team- Greg Ponzer, Alan Mullins, Dixon, and of course the Regional MVP Troy McKinley. I think they beat Mason County in the "Sweet Sixteen" Championship game that year, that had Alan Feldhaus and Middleton.

No, but they are the only "TEAM" from the 9th Region, to ever win the State Championship!!! and I really just wanted to give these athletes some credit!!! Do you think they deserve it???

I remember watching Moose play. They were very few players that could stop him and they didn' play in this state. He was tough.

At Breathitt, the most talented player I ever watched was Johnny Stacy, but the player I'd actually want on my team was Scott Moore. That's from about '87-present. I can't speak for the years before that, but I know we've had some pretty good ones.

Johnny's son plays for Riverside. He's still pretty young, a freshman or so.
