On the rematch situation, don't the NCAA basketball teams play more than once, (North Carolina & Kentucky)? How about the NFL? In the very old days they didn't but now they do.

 

Baseball, I loved it when the Al didn't play the NL, but now they do. So a LSU/Bama rematch isn't that unususal.

 

Iowa State in their six loses lost on an average to 20.7 per game lost. Coaches poll has Bama 2nd. As of today.

People just didn't want to see a rematch and two teams from the same conference do battle. Truth of the matter is LSU or Bama could probably hand OK ST, Stanford, or whoever a 20+ point beat down. People outside of SEC country may not want to see it but Bama and LSU are hands down top two teams.

Exactly, but just pretty much figuratively speaking had Bama not been in the SEC too but still been the team everybody knows they are would this have been a debate? Only reason it was a debate was because they played twice and are in the same division much less conference. They are one of the two best teams though so that is perfectly fine with me for them to get another chance.

I think the BCS got it right. The SEC is currently 7-0 in BCS Championship games, while the Big 12 is 2-5, with 3 of those losses coming to SEC schools. I think the Cotton Bowl could be used as a pretty good measuring stick between the two conferences. It is supposed to match the #2 Big 12 vs. the #3 SEC. The SEC has won this bowl 7 of the last 8 years.

 

Oklahoma State did average 49.3 PPG which is 2nd in the nation this season, but Alabama averaged 36.0 which was 15th and we saw how LSU stopped them. If you take the average ranking of Oklahoma State's opponets PPG allowed than they average allowing 30.6 PPG and would be ranked 79.8th nationally. By comparison Alabama and LSU are the top two teams in PPG allowed averaging 8.8 and 10.5 respectively. On the flip side Oklahoma State is ranked 61st in PPG allowed with 25.8 per game. LSU and Alabama are ranked 12th & 16th in points scored averaging 38.5 and 36.0 PPG respectively. I think that the offensive and defensive productions numbers over the course of the season would strongly suggest, that either LSU or Alabama would be able to significantly dimenish the effectiveness of Oklahoma States offense, while at the same time I do not see that the Oklahoma defense would have much effect on either of their offenses. I just feel like too many times now we have seen one of these high scoring, fast paced spread offenses get matchd up with the SEC only to be stopped rather easily. I do not see how this year would be any different.

 

 

I've heard the arguement that Oklahoma State had more quality wins than Alabama. If you take the current BCS standings than they each played 4 teams that are currently ranked in the top 25. (I believe that the current rankings are a more accurate reflection of the quality of the win that what the team was ranked at the time that you played them earlier in the season.) Oklahoma State defeated all 4 our their ranked opponets: #8 Kansas State, #12 Baylor, #14 Oklahoma, & #24 Texas. Alabama went 3-1 against their 4 ranked opponests. Obviously they lost to #1 LSU in OT, but they defeated #6 Arkansas, #22 Penn State, & #25 Auburn. I really see this as a wash as I feel that Oklahoma State would lose to LSU as well and Alabama best win is better than Oklahoma State's best win, while at the same time Oklahoma State's loss is far worse than the loss sustained by Alabama.

I wanted OSU, but I could not make a good argument for them. The "Alabama had their shot and came up short by 3 in OT" argument is a lot stronger of a case than "OSU lost to a 6-6 team a few weeks ago but can (probably) score on LSU" argument. For those that say Alabama had their chance, really OSU is the team that had their chance but lost to a sorry Iowa State team. They can blame the system all they want, but they are the ones who ought to be blamed.

The thing that bothered me during the analysis portion of the BCS Selection Show was the constant reference to the computer rankings and how they affected the outcome. I kept wanting to yell "HEY GUYS, THE HUMAN POLLS HAD BAMA RANKED #2, TOO!"
