It did indeed, until this years team anyway. J/K, or am I? :walk: IN all honesty though, I trully believe this is a state championship caliber Mayfield team. Awesome defense, balanced offense, excellent team speed, solid special teams, fundamentally sound, confident and they play with heart and as hard as any prior Mayfield team I can remember.

 

I was wondering about that as I wrote that post. Does anyone in Mayfield think this team is better than last year's? How about the team two years ago? How would the Mayfield crew rank these three teams?

We're praying for devine intervention so we can at least compete after all we've heard about your team. I'm praying for just one "significant" win so Snot will have to come up with something else original. If we are fortunate to win, we get to stop the "significant win" AND "Frosh champs" comments...my friend, that alone would be a huge blessing!

Last year's offense was the most efficient. Can't remember how many running clocks we had during the course of last year - 10 maybe- with the first string hardly playing after halftime. The offense is not too shabby this year, but it's the D that has gathered all of the accolades. Ya can't win if you don't score.

I was wondering about that as I wrote that post. Does anyone in Mayfield think this team is better than last year's? How about the team two years ago? How would the Mayfield crew rank these three teams?

 

In 2009, Mayfield had 2 really good playmakers in WR Xavier Shelton and RB Tyreese Murrell. I don't think the 2010 or 2011 team has any individual player as good as those 2 in those positions. However, the 2009 team probably had the worst of the 3 defenses, especially against the pass. Best running game of the 3, but, really relied on X and Tyreese for 80-85% of there offense.

 

The 2010 team had the best all around offense because they spread the ball around to alot of different people and they had a Sr dominated line with 3 of those as 3 year starters. That 2010 defense was better than the 09 team, as well, but, they were more a bend but not break defense that did give up some big plays. The thing the 2010 had was 4-5 go to receivers and a sr, 4 yr starter at QB getting them the ball, but, they were also the worst running team of the 3.

 

This years team has by far the stoutest defense of the 3. They don't bend, period. They swarm and attack and recover well. I'd say the overall team speed this year is also the best of the 3. The running game is improved from last year, as Jackson is just that much bigger and stronger this year and Ross is as good as Rump was as the 2nd option back. This years team also has multiple reliable receivers, but, a Soph, 1st year starter getting them the ball along with a talented, but, young OL.

 

I'd probably rank them 1) 2010, slightly over this years team 2) 2011, slightly over the 09 team 3) 2009... Chances are, if they played each other, they'd all go to overtime..

In 09 Mayfield played Beechwood with a start time of 6pm central

 

In 10 we went Beechwood with a start time of 7pm eastern.

First of all congrats to both programs for making it to this game (again!!). We all have great respect for both programs and as a fan we greatly miss playing Mayfield, and having a chance to play Beechwood. As with any program there are the 5% of fans that say things that shouldn't be said, but the two programs going at it this Friday are class acts and deserve this game for their program and their communities. I'm looking more forward to this game than eating Thanksgiving dinner!!! I think it will be close and a game for the ages, but am pulling for the Cardinals. I wish Beechwood a safe trip down to WKY and back, and that both teams leave the field healthy. Good luck to both and be safe!

That was a Paul Leahy thing. He liked to play those semifinal games on Friday afternoon, reasoning that it was Thanksgiving weekend and many people were off work anyway. Mayfield played Fort Knox in the afternoon in 1993, too.

 

In 2003, a lot of us were hoping that Mayfield would play Danville in the afternoon, allowing fans of both teams to also watch the Paducah Tilghman-Boyle County semifinal that night. Best I remember, that game started at 5 with the Tilghman-Boyle game at 7:30.

The Tilghman game with Boyle was at 7:30 and cold and snowing. Thank God I was in a Press Box for that one.

I think that the 2010 team would beat this years team, NO ONE, in class A anyway, could stop them from scoring, not even this years team. Both last years team, and this years team would beat the 2009 team. 2009 team relied entirely on Xavier, Murrell, and Guhy, good weapons, but 2010 and 2011 team have way more weapons and very capable line although not as good as last years.

Next years team may be better than any of these 3.. The defense will lose LB-Ross, DB-Higginson, FS-M.Jackson, but, they'll have Mills back at LB, who was starting this year till his season ending knee injury, so, he'll make up for Ross and Hughes will be back to play S, who started several games while Sevic was out, so, not really a dropoff from M. Jackson.. Replacing Higginsion at DB will be the toughest challenge, but, there are several underclassmen capable of stepping into that role. They have a couple of Srs that play on the DL, Wynn & Tracy, but, they rotate in and out with several underclassmen, so, the DL should still be good. They'll have Jackson back at MLB and the 2 bookend DEs in Scott and Downing and then Sevic at SS and the other DB will also be back, so, they'll have 10 of there top 15 defensive players back.

 

The offense should be improved with a year older QB, a year older OL(3 starters), a yr older Jackson and 2 of there top 4 receivers back and a talented JV unit with 4 or 5 of those kids that'll be big contributors next year.

 

Actually, most Cardinal fans have been pointing toward the 2012 season as what they would consider the next really strong Cardinal team. This was supposed to be a transition year with all the line men we were losing, losing Luke, a 4 yr starting QB, plus a few other key contributors, Rump, Richardson, Jones, Peyton, Gonzalez, but, as it's turned out, this group gelled alot better and faster than was anticipated and now they're being compared to the other past great teams and rightfully so. They deserve the accolades, but, it's yet to be determined if they'll stay in that discussion..

The winner of this game will win state easy in my opinion. From what I hear Mayfield is very fast and solid> Beechwood just seems to make alot of mistakes and penalties. If they dont clean it up Mayfield will send them home early. Good luck to both.

 

I seem to recall the MF folks saying they need to clean up the mistakes and penalties also...sounds like both teams have those issues.

I think the thing you guys aren't focusing on enough when comparing these Mayfield teams is the line play. I thought Mayfield's line play in 2009 and 2010 was excellent. I haven't seen 2011 yet so I can't compare them. UK fball fan mentioned the line in his post. To me, 2009 and 2010 was about your line as much as anything else.

 

In 2009 the Mayfield line controlled the line of scrimmage and Beechwood could do nothing. Murrell was quick but his line was huge in his effectiveness. I agree that Shelton was a dominator but I don't recall him hurting Beechwood much in that 2009 game, other than affecting the defensive game plan and maybe opening things up more for the rest of the offense. So I chalk 2009 up to Mayfield's line being that much better than Beechwood's that year.

 

In 2010 the gap between the lines was much closer. The key thing here was no one could get to Guhy. I wonder how many times he was sacked in 2010. I would bet it was very few times. So Guhy had no worries in the pocket and sat back there picking teams apart. I do think Guhy was a huge factor in last year's success but the line made it all possible. The other thing in the Beechwood game last year is the line was able to take control of the game in the 4th quarter running the ball. They were able to grind out first downs and run out the clock keeping Beechwood's offense off the field.

 

As other's have pointed out, this 2011 team seems to be defense dominated and that is because your stars are better on that side of the ball. Jackson is more dominating on defense than he is running the ball. Your other linebacker is also very very good (Ross?). So where 2009 was the line plus Shelton with help from Guhy and Murrell (all offense) and 2010 was the line plus Guhy (offense), 2011 is Jackson and the other backer (defense).

Whew! without a doubt a ton to overcome. They definitely seem unbeatable and perhaps they, or at least key players, have bought into it as well.

I'm sure the MF faithful have an immediate answer...is there "any" media predictions out there that is giving BW a chance? meaning...massey, writers, etc..
