I think the thing you guys aren't focusing on enough when comparing these Mayfield teams is the line play. I thought Mayfield's line play in 2009 and 2010 was excellent. I haven't seen 2011 yet so I can't compare them. UK fball fan mentioned the line in his post. To me, 2009 and 2010 was about your line as much as anything else.

 

In 2009 the Mayfield line controlled the line of scrimmage and Beechwood could do nothing. Murrell was quick but his line was huge in his effectiveness. I agree that Shelton was a dominator but I don't recall him hurting Beechwood much in that 2009 game, other than affecting the defensive game plan and maybe opening things up more for the rest of the offense. So I chalk 2009 up to Mayfield's line being that much better than Beechwood's that year.

 

In 2010 the gap between the lines was much closer. The key thing here was no one could get to Guhy. I wonder how many times he was sacked in 2010. I would bet it was very few times. So Guhy had no worries in the pocket and sat back there picking teams apart. I do think Guhy was a huge factor in last year's success but the line made it all possible. The other thing in the Beechwood game last year is the line was able to take control of the game in the 4th quarter running the ball. They were able to grind out first downs and run out the clock keeping Beechwood's offense off the field.

 

As other's have pointed out, this 2011 team seems to be defense dominated and that is because your stars are better on that side of the ball. Jackson is more dominating on defense than he is running the ball. Your other linebacker is also very very good (Ross?). So where 2009 was the line plus Shelton with help from Guhy and Murrell (all offense) and 2010 was the line plus Guhy (offense), 2011 is Jackson and the other backer (defense).

 

Thats not really true, VOR.. Jake Guhy, Lukes brother, does exactly the same thing as Luke did, sits back in the pocket and picks you apart, but, with a little more mobility than what Luke had, plus he's just as accurate. The thing Luke has on Jake is experience and little better arm on the deep balls, but, Jake is no slouch by any means. As good as that OL was last year, this years OL has been just as effective. I bet Jake hasn't been sacked more than a handful of times. In addition, Jackson is a much, much better RB than he was last year. You don't arm tackle him or shoestring tackle him this year and he is hitting the hole much harder and more determined. Ross and D.Jackson are adequate backups, but, neither probably quite as good as what Rump was last year as a second option back, but, still I think the running game is better, as a whole, than last year. Last years offense had a little more wow factor and explosiveness, but, I'm telling you, this years offense is very, very effective, albeit, a little more methodical. They still have 3-4 big play receivers with alot of speed and good hands. Honestly, I'm not so sure last years team was better, at all. They were fun to watch, for sure, but, this team may well be a step ahead from top to bottom. They're fun to watch, as well, but, for different reasons..

I'm sure the MF faithful have an immediate answer...is there "any" media predictions out there that is giving BW a chance? meaning...massey, writers, etc..

I think on paper, these 2 teams match up pretty evenly.. MaxPreps had BWood ranked #13 last week with Mayfield at #17.. This week they have Mayfield at #11 and BWood at #15. So, that's pretty even, especially considering its a computer ranking with no bias either way. They've kinda went back and forth on this site all year.. Massey had it like 33-30 Mayfield, at home, but, on a neutral it was 31-30 Mayfield and at Beechwood it was 31-30 Beechwood, so, I don't think it could get alot closer than that..

Yes, we had a lot of that last week, more than usual tho, mistakes and penalties have not been a major stumbling block this year outside of that game and maybe the greenwood game where we were still trying to find out identity and also 2 platooning at QB which was a disaster. I could give a few reasons for much of the penalties and mistakes last week but I know I will get hammered on here so I will just say we need to clean that up to win friday night!

Thanks for the poll update. I was just curious if any of the polls gave BW a chance or if those same polls felt we had made up any ground as most feel BW hasn't. As always in games like this, timely mistakes & penalties need to be avoided and also hope it stays close so neither team is forced to throw out the gameplan.

All the Mayfield fans are excited to play Beechwood. We used to get excited to play Danville. Its always fun to play the top tier programs in the state. NCC was one of those , PT and a few others. Next season we start off with Warren Central and Madisonville , those games if we win will give us more respect because us small schools can't seem to get any unless we beat a few of these teams.

We're praying for devine intervention so we can at least compete after all we've heard about your team. I'm praying for just one "significant" win so Snot will have to come up with something else original. If we are fortunate to win, we get to stop the "significant win" AND "Frosh champs" comments...my friend, that alone would be a huge blessing!

 

No way, those have provided a seasons worth of fun plus the whispers for MY could grow into shouts. Now Crunch even you have to realize that we will have nothing fun like that to bring up if Bw wins so I see it as all the more reason to hope for a Cards victory rahter than having a dull board with little to discuss
