They do draw from 25 percent of a county. Did you realize the county built a school 4 miles away? Didn't I hear they started their own feeder system? That will fix the numbers and they will be quality numbers. By the way, isn't Ryle the last school to beat Highlands and the last Kentucky school since 2006? I believe they also lost a star running back (probably battling Towles for Mr. Kentucky right now if healthy and the state rushing record) but they battled away at 7 wins, 2nd in a tough district and a play-off victory? Seems to me they are in good shape.

19 Juniors in '10 -> 13 Seniors in '11. 23 Sophs in '10 -> 18 Juniors in '11. That is at least 11 Juniors/Sophs that decided not to come back to the Raiders for their Senior/Junior year.

How many actually quit the team during the season? I would consider this a more important evaluation. Just looking at their roster at the end of the season it appears they added players from the beginning to the end including 11 freshman but none were removed. Looks like 54 to start and 65 to end (obvioulsy I am not asking about injuries). I watched Ryle beat Highlands on tv in 2010. It is obvious they have a work ethic that some young men may decide not to partake in but you don't beat Highlands (who destroyed their state champion opponent in 2010 by 50) without a great work ethic. BTW, they have a nice web-site.

I thought the point during the Duffy era was keeping things downsized. Duffy was kinda lazy, and only wanted to work with a certain number of kids. The rest were eliminated through cuts. That's how I understood it at the time.

Duffy NEVER cut anyone from a football team. Duffy demanded a lot. I know a Navy Seal who said Duffy's Triple Sessions during the summer made Seal training seem easy. Duffy had a loyal group of coaches and had very little turnover. Duffy wanted things run his way. I am not saying this is a good way to run a program, I don't believe it is, but those are the facts. The numbers were down for the football team due to the fact if you weren't going to see the field. Why as a 15, 16 or 17 year kid would you put yourself through all of that? Put on top he was a social leper. Working kids hard is all in the delivery. SEE Dale Mueller.

I do know this about numbers. You can have numbers and they not be quality numbers. In my day we called those guys hamburger eaters. But I would say that the short time that the program has been around compared to the other powerhouses in NKY the Ryle program has done well. I know they have made it to the 2nd round or further the last three years in a row. The entire paid staff is coming back and the kids are ready to compete in the weight room. The addition to a feeder program will help the numbers. From the 5th and 6th grade who competed with Cov. Cath and Campbell County their teams finished 1st and tied for 2nd in their league. The 6th grade combined team beat the Boone county combined team and Cooper 6th grade team in a bowl. The 7th and 8th grade team in their first year made it to the final 8 in the middle school playoffs and the 8th grade team was undefeated in regular season and the 7th grade lost 1 game. The freshman team finished tied in the freshman league and beat highlands. The JV had a successul year with a winning season and the Varisty with all their injuries won 7 games, lost to the likes of Colerain, OH; columbus Desales, OH; Highlands; district champ Campbell Co. and lost the rematch to Boone 14-7. They did this without Travis Elliott, arguably the best RB in the state, and several other players who had their season ended due to injuries. They lost in the playoffs without 4 players that played in the Boone game the first time and have a solid core of Juniors coming back to be seniors next year. I will bet they will have over 20 seniors on next years team. You will see the numbers go up in Union, and they will be QUALITY numbers as well.

Guessing they could hire a coach by mid January.

Great post. I was thinking the same thing. Maybe we could do a fund raiser like the one they did when that loud mouth attorney from Independence boxed that cop. I'd pay 5 bucks to see it.

What was the deal with the decline in numbers this year? As I heard it, just a rumor, but a ton of kids who had played in previous years didn't come out for the team this season because of the coaching. I do know that for a school the size of Ryle the roster was small before injuries and tiny after...

 

They all couldn't fit on the sinking ship.
