Same thing happens in basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. I assume you want those sports' post season changed, too?

 

Yes. All sports post season set ups need to be changed. Teams who haven't won a game during the regular season do not need to be playing in the post season. Those other sports would be happy with 3 or 4 classes. Not 6 like football because we see how crazy that is. Doesn't make sense to me that football has 6 classes and all the other sports in KY don't have any classes.

I agree with an earlier post, The more HS Football games the better. I also agree that it's better for an undeserving team to make the playoffs than deserving one to miss them.

 

I remember back in the 80's under the old system 3 of the top 5 teams in 2A were in the same district, with only one making the playoffs. The teams that didn't make it were better than the majority of teams that did make it from weaker districts.

That is because the overwhelming majority of what could be termed as fans of those teams don't give a you know what because their team is terrible. I think you are actually making the point you are trying to disprove.

 

I was in attendance at one of the 40 point plus blowout games.

 

After the game, a number of parents of the losing team told me things such as, "My son was just hoping not to get hurt", "Our kids knew they had no shot to win this game and really did not want to play it".

 

For roughly 50% of these first round games, the differences in the physical strength, roster depth, agressiveness of players, etc.,. between the #1 seed and the #4 seed is so great, that making these teams play one another is clearly not thinking in the best interest of the student players.

 

And, this past week the weather was fairly mild in Kentucky. Can you imagine the joy the players and coaches of the 40 point blow out losing teams would have had preparing for theses games in 40 degrees and rain???

 

Schools have all year to play their schedules and earn their way into the playoffs.

Basketball doesn't leave no one out and has no classes.

 

Due to the physicality and collision nature of football, in this regard, high school football should not be compared to other high school team sports.

 

If you had a son on one of the 40 point blowout loss teams that represented roughly 1/2 of all 1st round games, you might feel differently.

 

The aggressiveness, physicality, hitting, brute force, etc.,. between those teams is overwhelming.

I dont like the blowout games but I do like the fact we extend the season for 1 extra week. You could have an 11 game season with 4 weeks of playoffs instead of 5.

The KHSAA could just implement a BCS system and set up bowl games all over the state. (I am kidding because I am totally in favor of playoffs, but many posts in this thread make me think people would prefer this)

I say then, we make football 1 class and let everyone in. We wouldn't need a season since everyone is in the playoffs. Just flip a coin for seeds. This way no one would get injured before the playoffs start.

I have also heard some of these teams had a lot of players quit at the end of the year and were hoping just to have enough players to play the game. They didn't want to take the long bus trip only to get beat bad.

One of the teams I watched had a grand total of four guys in uniform not in the game. Don't know if your scenario applies to them, but the times I've seen that team in the past they've had a lot more players on the sidelines (and a lot more fans in the stands). And this is a school that made the state semis just a few years ago.

I'm saying I have seen zero posts from teams blown out complaining and that is where the 100% apathetic comment comes from. I don't believe all the fans on BGP of blown out teams are apathetic. I believe they have not posted to complain because they are happy to be in the playoffs regardless of the result.

Personally I like it. I think the cream of the crop almost always rises. There were lower seeded teams that won. In the big scheme of things this is one more week that high school kids don't have free time on their hands to get into trouble instead they get to play another week with their best friends under the lights one last time. For some kids memeories were made this weekend. You can't take that away from them. There's only 6 teams that win state each year. For the rest it's all about the journey with their boys they grew up with!

Get down to 3 classes..let everybody in, but make the matchups closer together logistically....then it would be like the other sports mentioned.

 

Don't forget that the KHSAA used to have the first two playoff games intra district like the other sports mentioned, but certain folks whined so much the KHSAA reluctantly changed it to inter district. Hence the further distrances in the first two playoff games.

 

The KHSAA, make it the KHSAA BOC of control, does listen. But not to message board threads, regardless of how many billion times a topic is started year after year after year. They listen primarily to the coaches advisory committees. The football advisory committee wanted more classes. The BOC gave them more classes. The football advisory committee wanted inter district competition in the first two rounds. The BOC gave them inter district competition.

 

If people are unhappy with the blowouts involving teams traveling long distances and 6 classes, my suggestion would be to approach your school's head football coach about the subject (complaining about it on message boards will accomplish zero, zilch, nada, nothing). If enough head coaches are dissatisfied with the current arrangement, the football coaches advisory committee should bring up the issue with the BOC to get it changed. From experience, I know the BOC listens.

IMO. At least give the first seed a bye and let 2 and 3 play the first week. It is the #4 Vs #1 seed that is silly... 98% of the time.

Heck, my team is one of the few that didn't make the play offs this year. We would have loved to have had another game, though it likely would have been a blowout.

 

If people don't want blowout games, how come they aren't complaining about regular season district match ups that lead to blowouts? I really wonder the football situation of the fans that are complaining.

I think injuries are a concern. My team was one of the teams that got beat by a very lopsided score. If one team is 70 points better than the other team, the one on one matchups on the field are pretty lopsided. My concern is always physically getting hurt moreso than emotionally getting hurt. In other sports, i.e., basketball or baseball, the chances of getting hurt are less than in football. Injuries can be used as an argument to keep the playoffs as is as well. Some teams may have an injured player during the season, who gets healthy by the end of the year and now their team is a totally different team. There was nothing good about our playoff experience. By the way, the khsaa is conducting a survey about the playoffs, I believe our school voted for a bye for the 1 seed with the 2 and 3 playing in the playoffs. 4 seed would be dropped with an opportunity to play a game that week against another non qualifying team. You still get to practice, you are competitive, you have a chance to end the seaon on a positive note.
