I think injuries are a concern. My team was one of the teams that got beat by a very lopsided score. If one team is 70 points better than the other team, the one on one matchups on the field are pretty lopsided. My concern is always physically getting hurt moreso than emotionally getting hurt. In other sports, i.e., basketball or baseball, the chances of getting hurt are less than in football. Injuries can be used as an argument to keep the playoffs as is as well. Some teams may have an injured player during the season, who gets healthy by the end of the year and now their team is a totally different team. There was nothing good about our playoff experience. By the way, the khsaa is conducting a survey about the playoffs, I believe our school voted for a bye for the 1 seed with the 2 and 3 playing in the playoffs. 4 seed would be dropped with an opportunity to play a game that week against another non qualifying team. You still get to practice, you are competitive, you have a chance to end the seaon on a positive note.

I think more than enrolllment should go into classifications. Add in a strong factor of how many playoff wins a school has had over the last 4 years. Then the serious programs would be much more likely to be playing each other in the higher classes and the amount of blowouts with struggling programs vs committed programs would diminish.

I really want to hear what the negative is in blowout games in round one. Travel is a non issue IMO because any team in the state would travel anywhere in the state to have a chance at a state championship. The only problem I see is the games aren't exciting games for the fans. These games aren't about the fans. They are about kids having challenges and experiences they will remember for the rest of their lives and an opportunity to win a championship. I still have not seen one good argument for why good teams should be kicked out of the playoffs in an attempt to avoid blowout games in round 1. There are #4 seeds that win games in round one every year. I say keep it as it is and let everyone have their chance.

I'll assume that you are referring to the strength/physicality part of that post? If so, we have that same problem in the district seeding games that you are not given a choice to schedule. What's the solution to that?

I was in attendance at one of the 40 point plus blowout games.

 

After the game, a number of parents of the losing team told me things such as, "My son was just hoping not to get hurt", "Our kids knew they had no shot to win this game and really did not want to play it".

 

For roughly 50% of these first round games, the differences in the physical strength, roster depth, agressiveness of players, etc.,. between the #1 seed and the #4 seed is so great, that making these teams play one another is clearly not thinking in the best interest of the student players.

 

And, this past week the weather was fairly mild in Kentucky. Can you imagine the joy the players and coaches of the 40 point blow out losing teams would have had preparing for theses games in 40 degrees and rain???

 

Schools have all year to play their schedules and earn their way into the playoffs.

I am not shocked that there are some players and parents on bad teams that feel this way. I am glad someone spoke up on here and shared some of the thoughts of a team that was blown out. I still favor the current system for all those #4 seed teams that want to play and get their chance at a championship. If a bad team feels they have no chance and doesn't want to play in round one, maybe we should let them forfeit and give a #1 seed a bye in round one? Should we allow the bad teams who don't want their chance take away opportunity from the players, coaches and teams who want that opportunity to play for a title?

CinciSportsFan brings up some pretty good points. There are a handful of teams in some classes that don't make the playoffs, but in others it is everyone makes it. We are very close to every team making it, but to me it is either we all make it or only the top couple of teams in each district makes it. We are in a six team district and have to win games to get in(which is good), but other districts just make it anyway. We are proud to make the playoffs because we earned it. It has to be one way or the other, it can't be almost everyone makes it!

The KHSAA, make it the KHSAA BOC of control, does listen. But not to message board threads, regardless of how many billion times a topic is started year after year after year. They listen primarily to the coaches advisory committees. The football advisory committee wanted more classes. The BOC gave them more classes. The football advisory committee wanted inter district competition in the first two rounds. The BOC gave them inter district competition.

I'd rather everyone get in than a deserving team not make it.

That is because the overwhelming majority of what could be termed as fans of those teams don't give a you know what because their team is terrible. I think you are actually making the point you are trying to disprove.

It seems to me, most teams have quit playing Trinity except for the ones that have to. I would say a lot of teams would agree with you.

I'm saying I have seen zero posts from teams blown out complaining and that is where the 100% apathetic comment comes from. I don't believe all the fans on BGP of blown out teams are apathetic. I believe they have not posted to complain because they are happy to be in the playoffs regardless of the result.

 

Or their teams stink year in an year out so they have no reason to join BGP and comment to this.

IMO. At least give the first seed a bye and let 2 and 3 play the first week. It is the #4 Vs #1 seed that is silly... 98% of the time.

 

This suggestion often comes up, and it has merit on the surface.

 

However, how many teams/coaches/fans would have reservations about this simply because it would mean one less game to accumulate stats for teams good enough to win their districts?
