Four #4 teams winning first round games is pretty impressive to me, regardless of being the better or worst team. It's hard to say that the current playoff format needs to change when this happens; makes for a tough argument.

Play the first round on Tuesday and the 2nd round on Friday or Saturday of the same week.

Montgomery Co over Cooper was a 4 over a 1. The potential for a cindarella story is worth every team being given a chance imo.

Maybe it will take teams like Highlands, Trinity etc....not backing off in the 1st half and hanging 100 points on some of these teams to get the attention of the KHSAA. These games are not even fun to watch.

No thats not what I'm saying at all. I believe this is the football thread. Our basketball state tournament is one of the best, if the not the best in the country ! I don't agree with rewarding a winless team a spot in the playoffs though. Now if your saying we should not have any classes in football and put them all in...have at it !

There are winless teams in the sports that I mentioned making the playoffs in those sports every year, including basketball. Why should it be different for football?

Basketball is not a class tournament. I don't recall seeing any winless teams in any of the other class sports. I'm sorry but I'm not for giving my 10 year old a trophy for his team finishing last in the league. Thats not sport to me.

Then lets do like basketball and make the last three weeks of the season the "district tournament". Winner and runner-up advance to the regionals. Then we can boost up everyone's self esteem by letting them say they made the play-offs when in reality the play-offs don't actually start until it's one and done at the regional level, just like basketball.

TB&G basketball does not have a class system. Do you understand what we're saying? When the district tournaments start in basketball. Those teams schools can have 100 hundred students or 2500 students. They are playing in the same tournament ! Come on man !!

We can agree to disagree I guess. There are teams in football that have won games and didn't make the playoffs. If I played on a 3 win team and didn't get a shot at the playoffs. Then there are winless teams that did...my feeling is I got the shaft. I might have been a little out there with the participation comment, but I think I made my point.

Someone please tell me what good Nelson County and Simon Kenton (among other outclassed teams) got out of their trip to the playoffs.Comparing football to any other sport is comparing apples to hand grenades.

After thinking long and hard, I figured I'd go ahead and lend my two cents on the subject. For me, when comparing football to basketball (or any of the other sports that allows everyone to get in) it comes down to what I use as the definitions of "playoff" and "tournament". (And keep in mind, these are my definitions only...not Webster!)

 

For me a playoff is a series of games between teams that have already seperated themselves from the pack during the regular season. You're using this to determine the "best of the best". Is there a chance that there may be some discussion on who got in and who got left out? Sure. But, as most coaches will tell you, you can't control what other teams may do...you can only hope to go out and do the best that you can do. Sometimes you do that and you still lose the game. Sometimes you do that and you may still not make the playoffs. The important thing here is that you've been given a chance to prove it on the field. And by having the regular season district games...you have, IMO.

 

A tournament, on the other hand, is a collection of teams that have been invited to particpate. The only important thing here is that you're on the invitation list. And the KHSAA has decided to invite everyone for basketball. For organizational purposes, everyone is put into a district. But, let's be honest...the regular season in basketball means absolutely nothing (aside from maybe seeding). You can go 25-0 or 0-25, but either way, you're getting into the tournament at the end of the year. Which is why you never hear anybody brag about "making the district tournament"...because EVERYBODY does!

 

So, getting back to the original question...I'd have to say I wouldn't have a problem with making it only the top two seeds in the district make the playoffs. The way it is set up now, a school in a five team district, can get into the playoffs by winning just one of the four district games, and if they go winless in the rest of the regular season they end up 1-9. That's hardly the best of the best, IMO. Right now, just getting to the playoffs in football is sort of like making the district tournament...nothing to really brag about.

The people who keep saying "come on man" needs to remember that it sounds stupid on Sunday morning.....It is worse here.:sssh:
