I understand and appreciate your perspective - but respectfully disagree. IMVHO - they fulfill very different roles for their teams. Mattingly played a whale of a game. Had me concerned - first half we had no answers. He was X tonight. First 1/2 it was all him. Without him it would not have been 14-6.

 

Mr. Wright fills a completely different role. By design. He is the "Distributor." I will keep ours.

 

Great game Rocks. Agree about the stupid penalties. Surprised by X's PF's. They seemed to have "lost it." Usually better coached and taught than that. Cannot remember where they had so many.

Are you kidding me. Wright is a pure quarterback! Mattingly is a running back trying to be a quarterback. Let's see... Mattingly directs a broken play (1) touchdown in the entire game. Wright directs a 34 point offense (one TD was a 65 yd punt return by special teams stud Ryan White). Once T adjusted in the second half, Mattingly spent a lot of time running for his life. Zero first down until 4 minutes to go in the game. IMHO, I will take Wright over Mattingly any day of the week. I will say... Mattingly played his heart out. FYI! A one dimensional scheme will not beat this ROCK team. You could tell Glaser was struggling knowing he had to throw the ball to keep up. Good win ROCKS!

Like Jim, I disagree too. On Friday night, I would probably say Mattingly had the better game. However, I really believe Wright has had a better career as a whole between the two. Over the past season and a half, he has masterfully lead Trinity through some tough games. Friday was not one of his best performances and I give much of that credit to the St. X Defense who was chasing him around the back field most of the night. Trinity's D did not penetrate nearly as well as X. Saying that, maybe saying Mattingly had a better night Friday is unfair??

 

I also wonder if Wright played for X and Mattingly played for Trinity, would either start? Wright is your classic pocket passer. While he is decent running the ball, I would not call him a huge threat running the ball. Where he will kill a team is his precision passing. Glaser has always run a system that demands a mobile quarter back first and passing ability second which fits Mattingly very well. Glaser loves it when the defense over commits to coverage and the other running backs and then having a QB with the running ability to exploit that over commitment. From the other angle, Beatty and Coverdale want to run a wide open system which tries to identify mismatches in coverage and they want an accurate passer who can pick upart such mismatches. Wright fills this role just about as well as any Trinity QB not named Brohm. Mattingly would not fill such a role as well.

Mattingly is a beast! I thought he had some REALLLY great passes, but he's even more dangerous when he keeps the ball. EXCELLENT play by Mattingly. I thought the X receivers played well, really going after their catches, and even laying it all out there on some that were difficult. I thought the X team as a whole played very well. Hatcher was covered very well by X, giving Mattingly a good chance to make plays. Great defensive plan, IMO.

 

I really, really, really, really wish Trinity could get their penalties under control, especially the personal fouls. I saw Quick commit the first penalty I think I've ever seen of him, and it was a completely avoiadable personal. I'm all for agressive, but they've got to get more disciplined. But other than that, I have absolutely nothing to be disappointed about. Great half time adjustments, and new focus in the 2nd half by the Rocks. Great big plays were a big difference maker in the 2nd half.

Some of your post I agree with, some I don't. I thought that X was fortunate to complete the bulk of the passes they did. They were very smart to avoid White (which they did the bulk of the game). Mattingly was superbly intelligent to expose our over pursuit in pocket pressure in the first half. Second half, our guards pinched and there was nowhere to go. After the game, Coach Glaser said he was excited at the opportunity of playing us again this year. Ironically, I am as well.

I want to clarify something...X was smart to notice we were playing a Cover 2, man under.....if you can escape the pocket, it takes a while before the secondary can react. Once we realized that they possessed no real threat to throw the ball, we relaxed our coverage...and suddenly those running lanes closed. How did X's adjustments (or lack thereof) work out?

Mattingly was very good last night and I truly feel sorry for him. Running the offense he does he will take a beating against good teams. Offensively X is a one horse show. Mattingly had zero support. Where is the poster who earlier this year was extolling the superiority of X's stable of running backs? I know that both Dawkins and Garrett Sauer are better the anything X put on the field in that position last night.

 

And like Mike I really hope that we get to line up against the Tigers again this year. In the last three games his offense has produced 13 points while defensively they have yielded over 100. Trinity didn't play particularly well the first half. Maybe in a rematch Mike will see Trinity play a complete game.

Since Mike tipped/waved his hat to the Trinity fans after the successful field goal attempt in the state final in 2009, T has outscored him 124-13.

Moeller fans were very impressed w Matting when they played earlier in the year. Sounds like a tremendous player bc Moeller fans don't just give out credit

In every loss this season, much of the same as noted above (Riverdale,Moeller and Bowling Green). Against teams like this YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE PLAYS. But aganst Trinity YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE PLAYS TO STAY IN THE GAME. They are quite the talent.

 

Would any of the above changed the outcome ? Who will ever know, but I would venture to say that it would have made the second half even more interesting

The kid does exactly what he needs to do. Being a basketball guy more than football, I would say that he is the quintessential "point guard" who runs the team and gets the ball where the team needs it to go to win and rarely gets the acccolades.

 

As far as Mattingly goes, excellent athlete, threw some good balls last night but IMO I'd be shocked if he goes as far as Wright at the next level.

I saw that as a make-up call for the PF on Quick. Both after the play was dead and not really warranted IMO.
