Louballfan, my son's experience at St.X was completely different. He played football and baseball for 2 years. He was never pressured by either coach to quit the other sport. Matt Spalding was a freshmen starter at linebacker and probably would have been a varsity starter had he chose to play football. Same with Loehnert. My son could have contributed signficantly to the football team but chose to focus on baseball his last two years. By the same token, a couple of starters on the freshmen basball team (Daylen Hall and Matt Wilson) elected to give up baseball and focus on football. From my perspective, St.X does not "pressure" kids to play or quit a particular sport.

 

I was just repeating what I have heard in the recent past from sources very close to the Bball program.

I'll take a shot at it. Before I start I'll admit that I look at it through green and white glasses, not green and yellow glasses.

 

First, Coach Beatty was brought in from Kansas City to be the Trinity coach. There has been an undercurrent from many on the X side that bringing in an "outsider" was somehow wrong. Coach Beatty won right from start. That created some resentment. Second, in 2005, 2007 and 2008, I think that Coach Glaser honestly felt that he had the better team only to see Trinity take the title. Coach Glaser was never shy about letting people know that he thought the better team lost those games. When X had a regular season sweep, Coach Glaser saw fit to rub it in with a broom. That created a lot of resentment on the Trinity side. He also saw fit to downplay the rain shortened Trinity win in 2006 as somehow no legitimate (see the umbrella). In 2009 when X had the better team, Coach Glaser chose to run a fake field goal for a touchdown late in a game where they had a big lead. Then he chose to rub it in by tipping his hat to the Trinity side after the touchdown. That has not been forgotten. Finally, after the success Trinity has had over the past few years, Trinity is attracting a much larger share of the talent. That is causing a lot of resentment from the X side. There is some bad blood. That said, X is a fine school. They will be back. I have only seen them play once, but I saw a team that will fight to the end. I expect a Trinity win, but I expect a tight game. My guess is that there is a twenty percent chance of an X win. A sixty percent chance of a Trinity win in a close game and a twenty percent chance of a big Trinity win.

I would add this. As for the fake F/G in the State game - that's part of football. I have no issue with what he did. AS I understand it -Coach B saw it coming and tried to have the kids adjust - but they failed to do so. Also at that time, I felt it was a bit of Coach G - getting a small measure of "revenge" - for the losses when he did decidedly have the better teams but got out-coached and outplayed - and alas lost.

 

But, the "tipping of the hat" was one of the all-time classless things I have seen on a field. He knows better than that.

 

But we forgot all about it.

I've been thinking the same thing. I always figure a rivalry game to be fairly close but I can see where these two teams would stick it to the other when they have a chance. T definely has the chance this year.

Kind of interesting to hear the green and white version of the "synopsis". I pretty much agree with the Trinity alum but wanted to clarify some points. The "resentment" toward Coach Beatty may be valid but not sure how much of it is that he is an outsider versus just kicking ST X's butt since he's been here. In fact, I think the backers of Green and Gold respect that Trinity went outside the family to get a great coach and are envious on some levels. But compare that with Trinity's prior coach who came from Indiana and the difference is Coach Beatty has probably the best coaching record in Kentucky history.

 

As to the share of the talent, no doubt that St X has 3 battles that they are fighting 1) the fight for the talent within the traditional feeder schools of the CSAA. Trinity made a major haul of the 2008 Toy Bowl champion St Patrick with only Karl Roessler going to St X off what some call one of the most dominant teams ever. 2) X has to get their share of the public school kids as Trinity has dominated with special athletes James Quick, Ryan White, and Jason Hatcher, and the Dawkins RB supplementing an already talent-laden team. Clearly, these are special kids with special talents. 3) While Trinity has enjoyed unparalleled success in football, St X has enjoyed a tremendous run in the other sports during the same time frame. I won't touch the subject of the value of a state championship in football versus another sport, what it has caused is tremendous competition within the walls of Tigerville for the athletes and their time. When X won their last football championship in football, they swept the fall sports in soccer, golf, and cross country, along with swimming and tennis and lacrosse and volleyball. Many of the 100 or so freshmen football players turn into college scholarship athletes in other sports. James Quick is a unique athlete because he plays 3 sports- but a Trinity starting linebacker who started on the baseball team as a sophomore quit baseball to focus on football. The opposite happened last year at St X as the starting QB in football quit football to focus on baseball. I would believe that would never happen at Trinity. Let me comment that I am not saying which way is "better", its just different.

 

As to the fake field goal, its about 100-0 Trinity since the fake, I hope you guys forget about that soon.....

Some of this competition among other sports, if not most, is self-inflicted. I know for a fact that X football players are strongly discouraged from playing other sports and my sources are mostly related to basketball. Trinity has several kids every year that play both BBall and Fball and although the football caoches may not like it, they compromise. This is one reason that X has been so far behind T in bball over the past 5 years.

 

And I think Trinity 27-10! I will be surprised if this game is as lopsided as last year.

 

I am not sure I agree with you on the "strongly discouraged" statement. Let's be honest depending on who you are at some schools is whether you get the ok to play two sports.

IMVHO - the Cincy X GAme as well as the Cathedral game were exactly what the Rocks needed. Have them sorely tested. Have them pass the test. Great job Coaches getting ready for the next 1/2 of the season (and there are 3).

^ The point is....to stop belittling his kids....why does he feel that way about our kids? Mike has made a few comments, this particular season, that are head scratchers.

 

I don't think he is belittling his kids (remember...I have heard coaches belittle kids.) I think he is trying to be realistic. If he sat there and stated how great his team was he would look like the biggest fool ever.

Last but not least...I am not going to sit here and say I fully understand comments/antics that have been made by Glaser. I have seen some things from coaches over the years that have made my draw drop so not a ton surprises me in this day and age.

85 - you are reading way too much into this. I think the only analogy here is that Glaser feels like he is playing a D2 team on Friday. We are talking talent and nothing else. Believe what you want.

 

It is amusing how even with Trinity on top of world, some of you are still hung on any phrase or quote that Glaser makes. Trinity is awesome, enjoy it. X will be fine. As it stands now we are not in the "Arms race" with you in football and basketball and will have to find a way to compete.

Can somebody that saw the St. X(Lou) vs Moeller game talk about how St.X matched up with Monty Madaris. I know that James Quick and Madaris are different types of WRs with Madaris being a bigger possession type WR while Quick is more elusive and explosive.

 

Also what kind of stats did Madaris put up on the Tigers?
