This "you don't get two guys up" stuff is retarded. How many times in a game do we see two guys up? All the stinkin' time. Ondrusek has been poor recently, and in a game that was tied against a team that is in the tank, you get another guy up as soon as that inning starts. Simple bullpen management. Do you think for one second that LaRussa wouldn't have had another guy up in the pen in that scenario? If you think not, you don't watch much baseball.

None would have done it in the situation we are discussing. Extra innings, tie game. Once you get to that point, you start thinking about who can pitch if this game keeps going. We have seen enough of these long extra inning games the past few weeks to know that. So let's walk through it.

 

Start of the inning - Absolutely zero chance any manager in baseball has a reliever warming up in a tie game as Ondrusek takes the mound.

 

Leadoff man on - Still zero chance IMO that any manager gets someone up in the pen, especially with all righties coming up and a pitcher with a 2.14 ERA on the mound.

 

Second hitter gets a hit, runners at 1st & 3rd, no outs - This is the first point where a manager might think about getting someone else up. So you quickly go through the strategy ... intentional walk to set up the force play at the plate ... that brings up another right hander. No outs. Bases loaded. Who do I want facing the little right handed hitter with the bases loaded? Can another pitcher even get ready while we intentionally walk someone? Could Chapman get ready that fast? I have one of my best ground ball relievers on the mound, who is also more than capable of getting a strikeout, and those are the two best things that could happen. Stay with him or try to get Chapman ready while I issue the intentional walk and then bring him in?

Rather than debate the 10th inning, maybe we should debate Alonso being in the lineup? Everyone wanted him out there and Dusty finally did it. Guess what? He lets a fly ball drop in front of him and the Astros get three runs in the inning. If Dusty has another outfielder in the game, maybe we don't even get to extra innings. But wait... that means Dusty would have left Alonso on the bench again and all the haters would have been screaming bloody murder about why he wasn't playing. I think that game showed us, didn't it? So let me say it. Dusty, please leave Alonso on the bench to pinch hit while we are trying to stay in a pennant race.

It is the same roster as last year going into the season except Volquez was back for the entire year, Cabrera was replaced by Renteria, Lewis replaced Nix and they let Rhodes walk who just got DFA'd.

I couldn't possibly disagree more.

With Ondrusek's recent woes, you start the inning with him, first sign of trouble you make the call to the bullpen. It's really simple. You don't let him chalk the bases full. You just don't. Again, not to pat LaRussa's back at all, but I guarantee that Ondrusek is not on the mound facing the 4th hitter of the frame if he's the skipper. Guarantee.
