David Williams reports gambling losses

The guy who is so hell-bent about not allowing gambling in KY reports a loss of $33,000 to personal gambling! Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but this means he won at least that much as well.

Since this was from 8-10 years ago that may be one reason he's opposed to it. Kind of like ex-smokers who often seem to be much more aggressive in opposing smoking.

Even still I can see how he opposes casino's. Casino's don't hurt someone like Williams who has money, who they would hurt are the poorer families that might go continually trying to hit the big break. Casinos pray on the weak often times, and Kentucky has enough poverty to combat without making the situation worse. I can also understand going to a Casino on vacation in Las Vegas and not wanting it next door to my house.

Those who are weak to temptation. It's your shot to be rich, they prey on that notion, even though the odds are astronomically against you ever striking it rich at a Casino or even turning a profit at one over the course of your life. A lot of people who are weak in spirit because of financial troubles go to the Casino looking to strike it big, but 99% of the time they wind up spending their last penny. Casino's do a lot of things to lure you in to entice you to gamble more, offer free drinks while at the tables, very cheap buffet's with top notch food, cheap motel rooms. All of those are tricks of the game to lure those in desperate to turn their life around.

I live about 45 minutes from Tunica MS, the casino's were suppose to change that place forever, and to some extent they have. But they haven't provided a ton of top notch jobs, Tunica's residents are still very poor on average, their schools have not improved, and really the only improvement in the town is the fancy highway that was built from Memphis that leads straight to the Casinos.

40 states already have casinos. I guess those 40 are wrong and Kentucky in its infinite wisdom is right? We already have the lottery and horse racing. I can make a wager on any horse race in the world on my phone 24 hours a day. I can bet on any sporting event on my computer. I can play any slot machine or table game from my computer. Why can’t people understand that going to a casino is not all about gambling? It is about a “night out” with fine live entertainment, good food and the possibility that you may get lucky at the 21 table and have a free night. If it was only about gambling there wouldn’t be a casino, everyone can gamble on almost anything right now.

The Casino's thrive on those people's lack of self control though, given the amount of poverty in Kentucky, why vote for something that in all likelihood would help contribute to more people being in the poverty rate.

I wouldn't go that far, but you can look at what Casino's have done in the state's that allow them and the answer is little to nothing. They aren't some massive revenue saver for state coffers and they don't really help that many local people get out of poverty, so it's all in where your priorities lay. If you want them fine, but don't expect them to solve any problems, and the only reason most people are pushing them is because of all the problems they will solve for the state.
