Cam Newton

Just curious, why do you consider him bright? Just based off of interviews?

It is a large part of it. Look, I am not saying he is a brain surgeon, but he is a lot smarter than a Jemarcus Russell who could not keep a conversation with a brick wall.

11 of 21 completions with no pads on and no defense? Yeah he'll be great.

Solely based on interviews I've seen, he certainly comes off as a fairly intelligent young man. JaMarcus Russell did not. That doesn't make it true, but that's all I've got to go by. Of course, I think Russell has done some work to solidify that opinion. The jury is still out on Newton.

He comes off as a llittle bit fake to me in his recent interviews/press conferences. It almost looks like a politician who has been coached up to say certain things and act a certain way. I don't feel like we're getting the real Cam Newton for the most part. Again, just my gut feeling. Of course, that means very little with regards to his potential and how good he may or may not be as a player.

Newton will be a work in progress for sure.

1. QB's from non-traditional, spread offenses don't have a great success rate in the NFL.

2. He doesn't have a lot of experience. He only played one year of SEC football.

3. Related to #2, he hasn't thrown the ball that much. In addition to only playing one year, Auburn was not a passing team.

Whoever picks him is basing it almost solely on potential. And, the potential is there. But, if anyone is expecting quick success, I'm afraid they'll be disappointed. However, if he landed in a favorable situation like a Flacco or Sanchez, where the teams could run the ball and play great defense to take the pressure off of him as a passer, I could see him faring well. He has unique playmaking ability, and on a team like those two, a few well-timed big plays by the QB could be enough to supplement the defense and ground game and get some W's.

Here is what I hope though. I hope whoever drafts him doesn't make what I believe is the #1 mistake made by teams who draft dual-threat QB's. They try to turn them into pocket passers. So, basically they draft a guy because of his athletic gifts, knowing that as a pure passer they're not on par with a typical first rounder, then play to their weakness by forcing them to stand in the pocket and throw rather then be a playmaker, which is what you liked to start with. I don't get it. Newton is the first of the dual-threat guys who has the physique to handle some of the punishment of running the ball from the QB position. Will whoever drafts him let him run?

I think he'd make a great tight end. He sort of resembles Tony Gonzales a bit to me.

To be fair about the spread stuff, spread QBs are relatively new. Prior to about 4 or 5 years ago spread QB's were either Air Raid guys or Run and Shoot guys or from zone read heavy offenses, none of which translates to playing QB in the NFL. Alex Smith played in Urban Meyer's offense when it was really gimmicky, but later spread QBs seem to be looking better all the time. Bradford looked very good this year, I thought Colt McCoy looked promising, and Tebow in a brief amount of time was not bad.

To me Newton's biggest challenge is what I think is the thing that separates great NFL QBs from the rest of the pack. I don't know that he has "it". Is he willing to be coached? Is he willing to watch alot of film and to humble himself before his teammates?

Newton has something Palmer doesn't leadership.

Palmer led USC to a Rose Bowl title. College "leadership" means absolutely nothing when it comes to pro ball. Newton played one year of college football and you act like he's the greatest thing the game's ever produced. If the Bengals want to continue to be the laughingstock of the NFL, by all means draft him. If they want to have a chance at being a legit pro level organization, steer as far clear as possible.

Yep. He'll look good on his pro day. He'll make all the throws to his guys. Then he'll be drafted in the top 5 in the draft. He'll be thrown into the fire. And he'll be thankful to God for his ability to escape because his ability to make progressive reads won't be there, or at least that's my bet.

Very concerning...he will need some time, question is how high someone buys him.

Someone will be the sucker to take Newton, Vince Young #2...

Newton will go no lower than #9 to Dallas. If that low.

So if most of you won't take Newton what qb's would you take?

I'd take Newton as the #1 qb in this draft without reservation. I like winners.

Charlie Ward was a winner. Chris Weinke won. Leinart and Vince Young both won. I like pro style QB's that can make all the throws and want to learn how to read coverage. I don't want an icon that talks in 3rd person. I'm not going to link it but check out the Boston's Barstool page. I'm pretty sure he is dead on for Newton.

That's concern #1 on Newton. What he'll be required to do at the NFL level is light years beyond what he had to do in his one season at Auburn. In an offense that was run heavy, he was in a favorable position for throwing the ball virtually 100% of the time. What happens when he's forced to pass against a defense that doesn't have to sell out to stop the run. I think it's going to be really difficult for him, and it is the reason I have serious doubts about Cam Newton. However, if he overcomes this one hurdle, the sky is the limit. That's why I think it would be hard to pick him and hard to pass on him.
