February 27, 201115 yr Newton may or may not amount to much, but I will respectfully disagree on him being a moron. Cam is a bright kid and very savvy. I didn't know buying stolen laptops and chucking them out of a windows was considered being "bright." I know everyone makes mistakes every now and then, but he also took a lot of money to play college football and he knew about it the entire time. I don't know how bright he can be..
February 27, 201115 yr Watching him at the combine, and I am no expert, but he seems to have trouble with the longer drops, 5 to 7 steps from under center. It was all simulated and he looked a bit rusty. Matter of fact they all looked a bit robotic. Is this just the pressure of the combine or are these guys like Newton really like that? I wonder how many 5-7 step drops from under center Newton has taken in his life in a real game situation? Full-blown spread offense at UF (no UC at the time), in JC, and at Auburn, AU only really got in it to quick snap and use a run play from what I saw.
February 28, 201115 yr Cam got a buzz going after his media workout. His measurables are great at the combine. He will light the world on fire at his pro day. I do not think any of these are surprises. What really matters as to where he gets drafted is 1. do nfl guys see him as a character risk- this could sink him in the eyes of many franchises because he is a qb, 2. does he know the game of football and can he articulate that to scouts on the white board when they ask him to at the combine and 3. do nfl guys question his commitment to the game with the icon stuff and his Under Armour deal? I still believe that when we get close to draft day, we will hear talk that Carolina is looking at Newton at #1 seriously. I do not remember who said it last year, but I was watching an ESPN deal on the draft and someone said of course the Rams would take Bradford over Suh. They said that, at the end of the day, you could take Suh and solve your issues on the d line or you can go get the face of your franchise at the QB position who you believe can play in this league. QB always has greater value than DT (Fairley) or DE (Bowers), so if Carolina believes that Newton can be the face of their franchise and that he will have success playing QB, they will take him #1. That being said, I think Gabbard also has a shot at #1 to Carolina.
February 28, 201115 yr Author Cam Newton will be a Buffalo Bill.. Bengals will probably end up with Locker.
February 28, 201115 yr I am not sold on Newton Me neither; I have the feeling he will be average at best in the NFL. Guess we will see.
February 28, 201115 yr It's amazing how big these guys are, a sculptor couldn't mold better physiques. They kept showing a clip of one of his "out" passes, it was way off target to say it politely. Which ever team takes Cam will have to live and die with his potential upside but the salary structure makes can really destroy any team that strikes out on their pick.

I know everyone makes mistakes every now and then, but he also took a lot of money to play college football and he knew about it the entire time. I don't know how bright he can be.. Exactly, because I inferred that was Rhodes Scholar material. Come on. Now I never said he is not or has not ever been in trouble. But I know a lot of bright people that have gotten in trouble before.
February 28, 201115 yr It's always risky to pick guys who excelled in a wide-open spread attack in college rather than a more traditional offense. There's no doubt that Cam Newton is blessed with unique physical abilities and I don't think it's a stretch to say that he's the first of his kind...to be that big, that fast combined with his ability to throw the football. We haven't seen anyone quite like him before. I've heard comparisons to Mike Vick or Tim Tebow. I don't see it. Tebow is not the athlete Cam is, nor can he throw the ball as well, IMO. Newton isn't quite as athletic or fast as Vick, but he dwarfs Vick in size. Just consider me an interested observer in how the Cam Newton career unfolds. I'm not sold on the guy being an NFL stud. But, he's got the potential to be an all-timer. He's one of those guys that, if it were me, I'd hate to pick him and I'd hate not to pick him at the same time. He's a big risk, IMO, especially with where he'll be picked and how much he'll cost. But, if it pays off, you could land one of the best players in the league, a nightmare for defenses, and be set for a decade or more at the most important position. If I needed a QB, I'd almost hope somebody picked him before it was my turn.

But I know a lot of bright people that have gotten in trouble before. Some of the smartest people in the world are criminals. Right? I can't help but think of Catch Me If You Can.

I would not draft him, but I would want him the other conference because if it all did come together, he could be great.

February 28, 201115 yr Just what the league needs. Entertainment icon who speaks in the 3rd person. If he falls flat on his face, look for your favorite underarmour gear to get more expensive to offset a monumental marketing bust.
