Adam Wienel (sp?) did an outstanding job with the Birds kicking game. Was that a 37 yard field goal , the announcers said that it would have been good from 50 yards out ! He also kicked the ball into the endzone on many kick offs !

 

Before this game Patrick T had zero D1 offers , I hope he has call waiting , he might be getting some calls today. Pat has it all ,poise ,size ,arm strength , football IQ ,speed , great vision and he is a true leader.

Highlands D made a bold statement in this game !

Congrats Bird's !!! It was the Perfect Storm, the Birds got healthy and executed a perfect game plan on offense and the defensive play was unbelieveable! The seniors should relish what they have accomplished and the underclassmen take the reigns and carry on the tradition.

T-Birds is one very proud uncle this morning. Congrats to my nephew Austin Abner (#5) and the rest of this Senior class for bringing home 20n10!!! You guys proved a lot people wrong....:dancingpa

We left their house at 2:45 am and they said something about breaking down the game after we left. They must have slept in this morning!

Did anyone notice a large contingent of the Christian Co. fan base bolt for the exits at halftime? By post game' date=' the seats were darn near empty for the runner-up trophy presentation. It's not like they had a 4 hr drive. I've noticed in my old age that fan support goes a long way in helping the kids on the field. Community support plays a huge role in the success of Highlands football. Also, wanted to say that it was nice getting to meet some of my BGP foes like Sweeperboy (aka Swiffer), LN, and T-Birds as well as Family Tradition that is more ate up with hunting than myself.[/quote']

 

 

Nice seeing you Whackem. Hunting comes second to Highlands football with Family Tradition, but it's probably a close second.

 

That was one of the best performances I've seen of Highlands.....ever! Just a complete game in every aspect.

 

Special teams play was superb, particularly given the weather and gusting winds down on the field. When Weinel hit the endzone kicking into a very strong wind at the beginning of the second half, Family Tradition and I just looked at one another and smiled. That was impressive. And what about the coverage on the couple of kickoffs that didn 't find the endzone. Tandy is an exceptional kick returner that has taken several for tds this year. Not yesterday. I saw Bishop, Duennes, Bowling and others flying down there, shedding blockers and making sure tackles.

 

O was dominant. Line blocked very, very well. Of any unit on Highlands team, the performance of the O line improved the most in yesterday's game. Well done. And no doubt, the run blocking benefitted greatly by Compton's return. It was great to see him back on the field for the last game of his high school career and you could tell he was going to make the most out of the opportunity. Towles of course played great. Wind affected most of his passes but I thought he still threw the ball well. And of course the kid can run the ball. He's extremely deceptive running. Receivers I'm sure would have liked more opportunities, but took advantage of the limited ones they got. No dropped balls.

 

D was, what can I say, simply absolutely fantastic. The last three weeks they have played lights out football. For the folks who didn't attend, Tandy and Hickey are indeed as fast and quick as advertised. It's not a bunch of hype. I saw some moves that left staps on the field but Highlands D swarmed to the ball. I saw Hickey make a couple of guys miss and look like he had some open field and then Bishop, Huddleston, one of the Bruns (or both), Hollinsworth or one of the others would coming flying like a bat out of Hades and tackle Hickey before he could get more than a couple of yards. It was impressive. DBs took advantage of the opportunities to intercept the ball. Great defensive philosophy to rush 3 and not over pressure him to where he'd pull the ball down; rather let him throw the ball. Hickey is a QB that is going to hurt you with his legs; not his arm and the defensive coaches saw it and planned accordingly. Having played against a similar qb on Withrow's team really helped prepare Highlands for this match up.

 

The only and only time I'm going to address the "mediocre" tag placed on this year's Highlands team: first, there is nothing wrong with being a mediocre Highlands team folks. Actually it's quite a compliment. And there were games that Highlands played this year where they indeed looked like a mediocre Highlands team. I'm not sure if it was the loss to Ryle that got the kids laser focused, something the coaches did, something the seniors said or did, or whatever, but what I am sure of that their performance yesterday was one of the best and complete I have ever seen from a Highlands team. And for that, a big tip of the hat to the coaches, the administration and the players. Seniors, great job leading this team and keeping them focused. You guys made me look pretty smart when I told the folks, who predicted there was going to be a big drop off after last year's seniors graduated, that they were wrong. You all kept things together when a lot of players got hurt, didn't let folks second guessing you from time to time get to your confidence, rebounded from the Ryle loss and played great playoff football. Returning players, you saw what it takes to win state. Accept the challenge.

50-0 in the final game??!! Is that the most lopsided final game score in KHSAA history? It' got to be close. Now the ADs from HHS & T need to be locked in a room until they come up with a plan to play each other for the next 4 years. Only 2 teams with 20 titles?! You'd probably get 8,000-9,000 folks at each site every year and that is no small amount of $$$. The two best programs in the state should meet the week before or after T/X. Or an even better idea: Have the KHSAA mandate that the previous season's champions play against each other in a specific week of the following season... A vs. AA, AAA vs. AAAA, AAAAA vs. AAAAAA. Alternate home sites and split the gate revenue like a playoff game.

After the game, Mueller let the superlatives fly. “This was by far our best game all year long,” he said. “… This is the biggest state championship victory in Highlands history, which makes this the best football team in Highlands history.” Mueller’s wasn’t the only record-breaking performance.

 

Highlands junior quarterback Patrick Towles rushed for five touchdowns – all in the first half. According to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association record book, which goes back to 1987, his performance was a state finals record.

 

20n10. Congrats to all Birds and all Bird Coaches, and to you Seniors that have 4 state championships. Enjoy and relish your feat. That alone marks you as one of the greatest classes of all time!

Agreed 100% I have been a big time fan of Adam all yr because of his abilitiy to individually stop teams from getting a big jump out of the gate on kickoffs. I know our KO cover team was outstanding yesterday and all yr long but there is certainly somethng to say about cutting the odds down and that is what Adam did all yr long. All this, not to mention his other ability, the ability to score!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

With this yrs performance, Adam should be included when the defense is referred to as the "Dirty Birds" LOL.

Sure is tough to beat a Defense that has 12 guys.

This group has been called "mediocre" all year by outsiders and they went out and made a statement tonight. Big props to Billy Huddleston who was quoted in the paper yesterday saying "he and his teammates were tired of being called mediocre and they were ready to go."

 

I was guilty of this and was wrong. Congrats to Highlands! Wow, that was impressive!
