My family wasn't particularly steeped in Thanksgiving tradition from the get-go, but we've got a couple of routines that are working into traditions...

 

For the last ten years or so my oldest brother and I have always gone squirrel hunting in the morning on Thanksgiving. Started off going on public land, and now we go down to my family's property in Owen County. The last year we hunted on private land, my brother thought to pop in his CD of Arlo Guthrie doing "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" - our dad (and most classic rock radio stations) would always give that a spin or two on Thanksgiving day. Anyway, it took exactly two listens of the song to make the drive from my brother's driveway to the parking lot of the wildlife management area. Now that we go to my family's place...it's exactly 3 listens to make it to the expressway exit. So yeah, squirrel hunting and Alice's Restaurant are my Thanksgiving morning traditions.

 

Following dinner, for the last 7 or 8 years, pretty much everyone in my crowd of friends gets together to have a beer exchange and to watch The Last Waltz. Everybody has to bring two 6-packs of their favorite craft brew, micro-brew, or homebrew and then we all get to re-assemble a couple 6-packs out of all the beer that everyone else brought. Follow that up with the final performance of The Band and guests and it makes for a good night.

For me, running the Thanksgiving day race through Cincy, Newport and Covington... Then eating as much as I want later in the day...

Stay for about 8 races and then come home to a long nap. Grab a pre-cooked turkey dinner at Krogers, and then work on Brossart basketball Green-White night intros and handouts.

My tradition is avoiding the family at all costs. Not a big holiday person, the next month can fly by for all I care. :lol:

 

No, I'm not scrooge, I don't mind getting a gift or two for those close to me, but the overall "experience" of the holidays, no thanks.

I watched a couple races yesterday and it looked nasty there.

I used to do a thing in Bardstown called the Turkey Kick but it started to get ridiculously crowded and I was tired of the hangover on Thanksgiving. This year we are switching around the eating times and I don't have to be somewhere until 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. I'm seriously considering attending Turkey Kick again.

 

When visiting the parents, I tend to leave the phone in the other room. I checked it after a few hours of playing cards, and a buddy had texted to ask if I was going. I replied about three hours later from his message, but never heard back. I was figuring I'd get a drunk dial for sure.

 

Turkey Kick is wonderful, it provides me an endless stream of clientele!

I have done the Churchill thing a couple times on the Friday following. Great day to be at the track.

 

Friday was great. Cold and windy, but somewhat comfy in the sun if you were dressed properly. Lots of snow bunnies out.

Missed the boat on this thread by a week or so, but faithfully you can count on the men in my family to go skeet shooting not long after dinner. Normally eat around one, watch some football, then grab the guns, skeet thrower, and shoot for a couple hours until time to come back for the last bit of football.

We always have fresh oysters and cocktails before dinner been doing it for as long as I remember which is too long.

Wednesday - A friend of mine from high school and his wife have started putting together this Friends Thanksgiving. That's been going for about four or five years now.

 

Thursday - Lunch with dad's side of the family, dinner with mom's side. It's a lot of food.

 

Friday - Drunk Thanksgiving at a friend's house. I'm supremely fat at the end of those three days.

I'm already seeing emails starting to go around from the out-of-towners in my crowd to see what the plans are for Thanksgiving Eve as well. Looking forward to the end of this week.

Donuts with parents, team and supporters in the morning while watching the Beechwood Tigers practice! A tradition I will always hope to participate in.
