November 27, 201312 yr My family wasn't particularly steeped in Thanksgiving tradition from the get-go, but we've got a couple of routines that are working into traditions... For the last ten years or so my oldest brother and I have always gone squirrel hunting in the morning on Thanksgiving. Started off going on public land, and now we go down to my family's property in Owen County. The last year we hunted on private land, my brother thought to pop in his CD of Arlo Guthrie doing "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" - our dad (and most classic rock radio stations) would always give that a spin or two on Thanksgiving day. Anyway, it took exactly two listens of the song to make the drive from my brother's driveway to the parking lot of the wildlife management area. Now that we go to my family's place...it's exactly 3 listens to make it to the expressway exit. So yeah, squirrel hunting and Alice's Restaurant are my Thanksgiving morning traditions. Following dinner, for the last 7 or 8 years, pretty much everyone in my crowd of friends gets together to have a beer exchange and to watch The Last Waltz. Everybody has to bring two 6-packs of their favorite craft brew, micro-brew, or homebrew and then we all get to re-assemble a couple 6-packs out of all the beer that everyone else brought. Follow that up with the final performance of The Band and guests and it makes for a good night. Well, my whole family (parents, my brothers and their wives, and my seven nephews) will be going to Carter Caves State Park this evening for a long Thanksgiving. I'm a little disappointed not to be able to go squirrel hunting in the morning, and that I'll be missing out on The Last Waltz and the beer exchange with my friends up in Northern Kentucky. Still....should be fun to spend that much time with my family, and to stomp around the hiking trails and caves of the park this weekend. Regardless, I've got Arlo and Alice's Restaurant ready to go on a CD, and I've got my own DVD of The Last Waltz (as well as some tasty micro-brews) ready to get into tomorrow evening.

November 27, 201312 yr When I was a teen a whole group of kids would have the yearly "Turkey Bowl" football game around 10:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. This tradition started long before I was a teen (not exactly sure when), and I couldn't wait to finally be old enough to play, but because of changing dynamics in the old hood, the tradition pretty much died about the time I graduated from high school. :cry: Sure glad that I at least caught it before it was all said and done. We even had one neighborhood girl that was tough as nails play in it for at least 5 years.

November 25, 201411 yr The last few years my "Thanksgiving Traditions" have consisted of working late on Wednesday, driving home on Thursday, eating with the family, and driving back to Louisville because I have to work at 7 am on Friday... Work has ruined the holidays for me.
