I think a lot of people forgot all about him. Justice is definetly in the conversation.

When you compare Maile to some of the other great athletes in the history of nky high school athletics....not even close. Sorry.

Well then I take back my nomination.. Derek Smith for sure then.

Anthony Luther from Newport last year has to be in the discussion. He was only about 6'3" and couldn't have weighed in at more than 160 pounds. That kid could sky though. He seemed to pick rebounds off of the top of the backboard and he dunked with ease.

Charles Sheffield was a big time athlete...

Sheffield comes to mind, as does Dwight Campbell and Antoine Brown from Holmes.

I think the nod goes to Derek Smith. He only played baseball his freshman year and that could've been his best sport. Straight up stud football and basketball star! Didn't he earn 1st team ALL-SEC as a soph???

Not to steal thunder from this thread, but has there been an NBA basketball player from N. Ky. since Dave Cowens? That is 40 years ago! As I was trying to think of great athletes that thought crossed my mind. I know Jack Jennings played overseas. Brian O'Conner played in Europe and in the CBA. But I don't think N. Ky. has one NBA player since Cowens. Am I missing someone?

There's a difference between "great players" and "great athletes." I'd venture that the Luther kid from Newport was a better athlete than any of the 3 you mention yet was nowhere near the b-ball player.

The kid that nkufan was trying to think of from Lloyd was Charles Kinney. Graduated in '05 from Lloyd, I think. Very athletic kid, but shouldn't be in the discussiion for best athlete in NKY. He's in the "who's who" of Lloyd, though, with Charles Sheffield, Myrion Hopkins, et. al.
