Best athlete in NKY History that you remember, Not best player just Athlete?

Featured Replies

I'd have to go with Arrez Henderson of Holmes, but then again I am young...Arrez had the biggest calf muscles I have ever seen, he was a freak athlete and had a pretty good overall game...But there's one I'm not remembering well but he played for Lloyd maybe a 4 years ago, Kimmey or Kinney or something or another...Anyways the kid from Lloyd was sick, he did some of the craziest pre game dunks I have ever see, not a very good basketball player but his athletic ability allowed him to do work at the High School level...

Arrez would certainly be in the discussion.

Dicky Beal would also be in the discussion.

Derek Smith from Highlands as well.

Best overall athlete that I have seen was Brett Hamblen (sp) he was very good at whatever he did..

Leo Foster of Holmes was lightening fast, an all 9th Region basketball player and broke into MLB as an infielder for the Atlanta Braves at age 20. For players excelling at a single sport, hard to go wrong with Shaun Alexander or Jim Bunning.

I think both Elijah Pittman and Ricardo Johnson would both have to be in the discussion as well.

Elijah played above the SQUARE and could defend anyone on the floor at 6'8.

Ricardo also had unreal athleticism and probably would've been a pretty darn good tight end or wide receiver in football.

Brandent Englemon is another one that was good at whatever he did. All state in football, all 9th region in basketball, and even had a solid year his senior campaign playing baseball for the Dogs. Started shortstop and batted lead off or number 2 in the lineup.

Only person in khsaa history to finish runner up in both Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football. Impressive.

Derek Smith of Highlands (hoops, football and baseball), and I think Charles Sheffield of Lloyd was a beast (hoops and football.)

Frank Jacobs of New Cath has to be mentioned. Played football and baseball at Notre Dame. He could crush a baseball.

From Wiki - Frank Jacobs, Kentucky "Mr. Football" Award winner, 1986, Notre Dame football and baseball player — last player to score a touchdown for Notre Dame in a National Championship game. Holds Notre Dame Record for most home runs (season). Newport Central Catholic, 1987

I am going to go off the board here and suggest that Greg McGraw from HHS '08 was an exceptional HS athlete that unfortunately was saddled with injuries throughout.......worth the price of admission to see him play!

Agreed, had the pleasure of watching him on the hardwood and limited action in football but man what an athlete.

Derek Smith hands down.... Runner up in Mr Football and Mr Basketball, helped Highlands to a regional title in baseball as a sophomore.

Chris Haynes from Scott he was a dunking machine he could dunk in middle school with ease.

Luke Maile. Maybe not top, but certainly should be mentioned. 1000 point club for basketball, and is a division 1 baseball player.

When you compare Maile to some of the other great athletes in the history of nky high school athletics....not even close. Sorry.
