Reds Hot Stove League for 2011

Featured Replies

I think he can help the team. He certainly is an upgrade defensively over Gomes.

Hermida led all right fielders with 9 errors in 2007. He'll spend most of his time in LF in Cincy, though.

I'm OK with Renteria if they only plan on playing him about 50 or 60 games.

Walt is pursuing him for a back-up role. But, with Rolen's durability, we need more infield depth.

I'd love to add Renteria. Decent bat & a guy who knows how to win.

This is a move to sign a replacement for Nix even though it looks like Nix hasn't reached an agreement with Seatlle yet and could still be in the Red's plans for 2011. The Red's have also made an offer to Renteria which imo is not a bad move if they don't overpay for his services. I am still not sold on Janish as an everyday player and I don't think the Reds are either. This may fill the void until they decide on whether Cozart can fill the bill at the major league level. It also looks like they are still interested in Podsednik as an outfielder. With Balentin heading to Japan they are a little light in outfielders on the 40 man roster. I have faith that Jocketty will make the moves necessary for the Reds to compete for the division title again.

Also not getting Rhodes back pretty much locks up Chapman in the Pen IMO.

What the reds need to get is a big time outfielder to replace Gomes in left field. Gomes can hit but he is inconsistent and his fielding is really not that good.

The Reds Rotation will be very good this year.I think it will be led with Bronson followed by Leake, Wood, Cueto and Bailey. Im not including Volquez because he is so inconsistent when pitching and i think that the reds need him to stay consistent to not just win but stay in the game for 6-7 innings instead of 3-5.

The Reds also need to use Hannigan more then Hernandez this season. Hannigan has hit better than Hernandez and is probably just as good to maybe even a little better then him on the defensive side.

And the last thing they should do is look at who can be a solid back up for Scott Rolen. Cairo can field well just im worried about his hitting and Fransico can bat but has trouble fielding the ball. So i would look at who is in there farm system that could be that solid back up for Rolen.

All they need now is Matt Morris and Fernando Vina.

1. Hanigan is a much better defensive catcher than Hernandez. It's not even that close.

2. Volquez will be in the rotation this year. Leake is the odd man out, IMO. I think Volquez has to return to form for the Reds to make the playoffs again this season.

3. You're not going to find any better production than Gomes for less than 3 million. Cincy simply doesn't have money to spend.

Always that sounded like a gastro intestinal issue.

The Reds signed OF Fred Lewis to a 1 year contract today. I like the deal. It gives the Reds a left handed platoon in LF for Gomes, and gives them an experienced leadoff hitter. An outfield of Lewis, Stubbs, and Bruce should be able to cover a ton of ground.

Not a bad signing at all, and Lewis is a guy that can hit leadoff against righties.

Walt said on WLW tonight that Janish is the starter at SS and Renteria was brought in as a "complimentary player...

Another veteran role player can never hurt your team. He can do some things that Gomes and Hermida can't do and he is a pretty decent defensive player as well for late inning situations.

We'll see what happens later on in the season. I still don't see Janish as an everyday player but at least with this move they have a vet that can play the position should Janish falter and can probably field other positions should the need arise.
