December 10, 201015 yr Mo Egger was discussing Votto's potential deal yesterday. He posed a very legitimate question, basically asking, "If the Reds sign Votto to a long-term deal, are fans willing to pick up the tab?" Because, after all, raised ticket/concession prices is where the money will come from. That is a legitimate question. The fans did not really support the team this past season when they won the division and made the playoffs for the first time in 15 seasons. The Reds ranked only 20th in the league in home attendance. That will have to improve if the team is going to significantly increase payroll.

I think a big part of that was due to the past how many years of losing. Most fans IMO were waiting for the wheels to fall off, because it's happened so many times in the recent past. I think we'll see a fairly large increase in attendance this year. Heck, I've already signed up for a 20 game package which I wouldn't have ever considered before.

The Red's raised season ticket prices roughly 20% for 2011.
December 10, 201015 yr The team that they built could not beat good teams. They could beat up on the bad teams. It was good enough to make the playoffs but nothing more. I want the team to take the next step. That's what I was alluding to. I'd trade Francisco and a couple prospects probably even one of the pitchers for an outfield bat. Locking up the the key assets of the team is a good first step. I love the Bruce contract.

What team is going to trade the type of bat you're talking about for a package centered around Juan Francisco? Fact is, this team is in a pretty good position to stay atop the division as is, as long as their pitchers continue to progress.
December 10, 201015 yr I usually got to 2-4 games, but this season I went more and expect to go to even more next season.

Have you ever heard the saying, "You have to lose one before you can win one" this team one the division and got a taste. I expect better things from them in the future. One has to believe that these 23, 24, 25 & 26 year olds are not close to there potential yet. Supposedly peak years are between 28-33. I'm excited about the possibilities with this team. Plus...Walt knows what he is doing !
December 11, 201015 yr If you are happy with Johnny Gomes being the starting left fielder, so be it. I would just be more satisfied with a player that is somewhat competent on defense and a lot more consistent at the plate. If the nationals beat the reds next year I am going to be angry haha.

Obviously I am sure they want someone better than him it's not that easy.
December 11, 201015 yr According to John Fay (Beat writter for the Reds)........... The Reds have had preliminary discussions with Johnny Cueto on a longterm deal. Cueto, like Votto and Bruce, is eligible for arbitration. Cueto/Reds should expect a settling on a contact in this neighborhood: A 4 year extension in the 26 mill range should be close (3.50/5.25/7.00/8.75/10 mill option or 1.5 mill buyout)
December 11, 201015 yr ^ That sounds good to me but they need to be careful back loading all these contracts when they all get into the last year it's going to be eating a large amount of the payroll.
