It bothers me greatly and I think grades are very important. I know as many of you have stated, these guys will make a ton of money...

 

Anyone think Antoine Walker might wish he had something to fall back on?

Walker's problem is far from not having a degree. He was in the NBA for 12 years and made millions and millions of dollars. If you need a degree to fall back on after making the money he has you were probably too stupid to get the degree to start with.

In order to receive "higher" recognition for a lot of their programs they have started turning away many more Kentucky students to increase the out of state and minority enrollment in all programs. Around the board in UK grad schools the number of offers to Kentucky students is down considerably.

 

I know the Med-School does an excellent job of giving UK under-grads the upper hand, and I don't know many in-state kids who didn't get into UK under-grad...

60 percent of NBA players and 80 percent of NFL players file bankruptcy after retiring...so, would it not help for them to a have a degree and fall back plan?

 

I was only using Antione as an example. It is a far reaching problem. I'm not saying a degree is the end all be all, but it sure looks better than 1 year of college and a 1.6 GPA.

Off topic, but it astonishes me to see guys like Walker and Mike Tyson absolutely broke after the money they have earned. I know there are many, many more and their stories are as equally astonishing.

Have you ever watched the show about the Lottery winners on TLC. Most lottery winners go broke too. They assume the money is going to run out. Simple math -- rookie contract for the #1 overall pick this year $13.7 million guaranteed for 3 years. Half for taxes and now you have right at $7 million. 10% to your agent and some to business managers, attorneys, etc and you are down to about $5.5 million. Let's say this player never signs another deal or it is minimum. He buys a house for 1.5 million and has a 15 year mortgage on it at what, $7K/month a few cars that are around $60 - $80K...career over, they still owe money on homes and sadly possibly ex-wives, children, and the entourage. BROKE!!!! Sad but true.

Under any circumstances it is disappointing and embarassing for the University. I buy some of Cal's story with the transitioning and all, but the reality is the kids have tutors and their classes, as everywhere, are hand picked. Patterson graduated in 3 years. That is not to say all of them can, but at 12 hours a semester, with tutors, I don't think that a 2.5 is out of reality. That is 2 Bs and 2 Cs.

I don't find anything astonishing about the situations many pro athletes face after retiring.

 

Let's be honest, most of your top athletes come from terrible surrounding. Surroundings many of us here on BGP have never and likely will never have to deal with. A lot of these kids have absolutely nothing their entire lives. Millions of dollars are thrown their way and they don't know how to deal with it.

 

This brings me to my second thought. I'm dissapointed with the ball players that failed their classes. I'm dissapointed, but I'm not surprised. These kids are coming to school for one reason and one reason only, to put in their time until they can go to the NBA.

 

Why are we making kids attend college ? It hurts the universities more than anything. Let these kids go pro out of high school or put a 2 year minimum on their collegiate career. Someone give me a good reason why John Wall needs to know how to balance an equation ? If we're going to force these kids to play college ball, lets at least teach them some skills that will help them down the road. Teach them how to deal with their money, how to manage their wealth and how to interact with the public.

No one is forced to attend college. They can go pro any time they want. The NBA simply says they aren't going to allow them to develop on their dime...

25,000 plus people doesn't show up to watch UK in an academic meet night after night. Do people really care about this?
