GPA won't matter as long as Cal keeps a 4.0 in the NCAA tourney.

 

It matters to me and many others that I know.

Why dont they just create a major in sports they are playing? I mean they have majors in theatre, art, and music, whats the difference? I know, I know the academics do not view it as any type of "fine art" which in reality it is!!!

I'd say 2.5-3.0 should be the range they should stay in...

In all reality, this would be a good idea.

 

They could take some life skills type classes, and I would recommend they take a public speaking, marketing, and financial class. All tools that would help them later on.

As a teacher, truly value education and I have dedicated my life to ensuring that young people receive a quality education in all of the classes that I can impact.

 

I say this because I am in the minority; I do not believe the socres in this report are that big a deal.

 

I ask myself two questions: 1. Are the students meeting the standards to play as outlined by the NCAA and the university? 2. Are the students enaging in conduct, academically, that would be in line with the expectations outlined by the NCAA and the university?

 

The answer to both questions are yes, if I read the report correctly.

 

I would like to see our players GPAs closer to the average of other students at UK, but the real issue here, IMO, is the obscenely low standard that is set to maintain eligibility in a sport. A 1.8 GPA, seriously? I think that the standard is a joke, but if UK athletes are meeting it then I don't see that as the issue. The real issue is the standard; it needs to be raised to ensure that we don't lose the "student" part of student-athlete.

I wonder how much Cal's policy on walk-ons hurt the team GPA? A few more 3.5's sure wouldn't hurt...

Is the GPA good? No!! This however seems like more Jerry Tipton bull crap in my opinion. This comes out the day after the Derby (I would say this is the top print day for the HL all year) on the front page of the whole paper. I would like to see this number higher, but given everything that has happened with the program 5 early NBA entries and what not, this number is somewhat to be expected.

I look at what Cal did as a whole at Memphis with graduating players more than what I am going to look at what he did in one semester at UK.

 

Tipton just wants to grandstand UK and Cal so bad, especially since the Patterson's new truck debacle he will dig up dirt wherever possible!!

No, because i'm not an extremist and like one poster stated, they were in the guidelines for eligibility. If you read my other statement on this, the University should raise their standards there by forcing the players to maintain better grades. I do believe that academics AND athletics should both be evaluated in a coach though. He did well on the court, and they failed miserably (IMO) in the classroom.

Disappointing, but not overly surprising. You can point fingers and make excuses all you want, but the bottom line is that they have to do better than this.

But when you recruit kids that only plan to stay 1 season, why are they going to put in the time and effrot in the class? There dream is the NBA not a BA.

Not unusual GPA's for freshman, whether they play ball or not.

 

And by the way I could care less what their grades are.

 

I care. The one and dones have a huge negative impact on grades. That is the downside. The NBA's rule of 1 year is a bad deal all the way around. I would like to see either go pro immediately or at least 2 years of college. This way they would have to care for more than just 1 semester, ... at least 3 semesters. They are supposed to be student athletes. I was afraid of this.

I don't care for Tipton, but you can't bash him on this one. Sure, he probably planned the article and used the Derby coverage to his advantage, but don't be so quick to lump all of his articles in together.
