I don't care for Tipton much either, and this was an unusual year. People must take that into consideration as well. There will not be 4 one and done players year in and year out. That affected the GPA greatly. This was just one year that isn't really comparable to any others so let's not put these grades under a microscope yet until there is a couple year's worth of data so there is a greater sample to look at. If the grades are like this year in and year out then maybe there is a problem with the way Calipari is doing things from an academic standpoint. Low GPA but HIGH starting salary upon leaving the institution. Just saying. Like it or not, for some of these guys it IS NBA prep and that's all. Like it or not, to the institutions these kids mean millions of $$$ to the institution and that's all. Let's not pretend all parties aren't involved in this deal.

As a "fan", do we really worry about grades? Right, wrong or indifferent, I don't.

 

I think this would be a non-issue had Cal not made a big deal to brag earlier about good grades.

It bothers me, because it makes the University that I attend look poorly.... UK has been making a lot of strides becoming a very good school, and this sheds a negative light on the university in the national spotlight...

It bothers me greatly and I think grades are very important. I know as many of you have stated, these guys will make a ton of money...

What is the primary purpose of college? To give you an education or to prepare you for a career?

 

I would tend to say getting prepared for a career is #1, and getting educated is #2. Obviously, those two are inseparable in many cases, but not always.

 

A small percentage of these kids have a future career in sports, so I'd say getting prepared for that is more important than their GPA. Would it be nice if they also excelled in the classroom? Absolutely. It can only help them. But, GPA's don't mean that much on the court.

 

I'm not the least bit concerned with the GPA's of a bunch of guys who won't be using their education to earn money and who never had any intention of finishing their degrees at UK before leaving school.

In order to receive "higher" recognition for a lot of their programs they have started turning away many more Kentucky students to increase the out of state and minority enrollment in all programs. Around the board in UK grad schools the number of offers to Kentucky students is down considerably.
