May 2, 201016 yr Under a 2.0, with the classes they are taking, is ridiculous... The system in place is a failure... This isn't a minor league system, this is an academic institution... Go to Europe if that isn't what you want...
May 2, 201016 yr Mr. Kroger: two C's, two D's and an F. That's a 1.2. Congratulations, Kroger. You're at the top of the Delta pledge class.

Go to Europe if that isn't what you want... What's the point of college? In reality it's a path to take to get a high paying job. What do these guys have? A path to a career in one of the highest paying jobs in the world. Why would they care if they fail if they know they're going to the NBA? To brighten their minds and make them smarter? Gimme a break. They could care less about school and I don't blame them. Getting good grades is a pain in the behind but some of us have to get good ones and some don't. They fall into the category of not NEEDING good grades. Why would they try?
May 2, 201016 yr Disappointing, but not overly surprising. You can point fingers and make excuses all you want, but the bottom line is that they have to do better than this.

If the bolded is true, why have grades? I essentially understand and agree with your argument, but college is inherently about education, not athletics... It does a disservice to the University of Kentucky institution to get a freaking 1.6 when your classes are Soc 101, Com 101, and Dinos and Disasters... A 2.5 isn't getting good grades, that's just caring a little bit and being mildly competent... If your completely disinterested in academics, go to Europe.... Even if the only worry is basketball, this will end up biting the program in the butt... Why would they try? Seriously? What is the purpose of doing anything, without intentions of being successful?
May 2, 201016 yr 2 of the 5 freshman had 1.6 and 1.7 GPAs. One was Orton, I believe, who is actually a pretty smart kid...
May 2, 201016 yr This is not good. I'd like to see the GPAs improved a lot. Hopefully this spring will be a different story, although I don't know that it will be. I'd say most people have a pretty good in their heads who the culprits are. I've heard rumors myself. But in Calipari's defense this could be some players that were already there that have academic problems too. I hope this issue is dealt with and we see a nice hike in GPAs in the spring semester. Also, I hope Tipton has another article about it for better or worse. Next years freshmen class looks promising. Kanter speaks several languages I understand and I hear is really smart while we have all heard what a strong student Brandon Knight is for starters.

Why have grades? For the people that need them, unlike future NBA lottery picks. College is about education, not athletics? According to everyone except future NBA lottery picks. School matters to real students. These guys are going to college because they have to, otherwise they go overseas. Some don't want to go overseas. They'd rather play in one of the best basketball leagues in the world and get more exposure, and develop their game and not care one bit about classes. If I was a future lottery pick, I would certainly blow off classes as well. Unfortunately, I'm not going to the NBA, so grades are necessary and I actually have to work for good grades. For them, performing well on the court is getting an A. The only grades that matter to them is the grades on the stat sheet.

My thought is though the University should hold the STUDENT-athletes to a much higher standard. Below a 2.0 in your first semester and you shouldn't be eligible for the 2nd semester. I love UK sports as much as the next person, but this is a total embarassment to the team and the University IMO.
May 2, 201016 yr One was Orton, I believe, who is actually a pretty smart kid... Well his GPA might be another reason for him to leave early then.

His GPA will count on the team's GPA even though he is a walk on won't it? Edited May 2, 201016 yr by PurplePride92
May 2, 201016 yr GPA won't matter as long as Cal keeps a 4.0 in the NCAA tourney. I would say 4.0 on recruiting. 3.5 in the tourney. I am proud of the many UK fans on here that are disgusted by this report, as I think they have the right perspective for a COLLEGE program.
