I work hard for my income and would like it to go to a University that A.) has great athletics and B.) has academic integrity...and yes those two can happen together. I know i'm in the minority here, that most of you only care about winning on the court. I guess i'm just different in that regard. I think a University has a responsibility to its students and whether hey act like it or not currently, ball players are student (or should be).

My whole point is that the phrase "student athlete" (speaking in terms of football & basketball mainly) is a joke. These kids being criticized are literally making billions of dollars for numerous organizations, schools, and companies. Collectively, they are a money-making machine. Their primary purpose is to compete at the highest level of amateurism in their respective sport. While I would certainly desire them to take schooling more seriously, I can't fault them either. I think people are making way too big a deal out of this.

As long as the one and dones do at least enough to keep the program from being punished then who cares. John Wall never came to UK to get a degree. Demarcus Cousins never came to UK to get a degree. Brandon Knight isn't coming to UK to get a degree. You can't cheer in one thread for landing these guys then critize the GPA in another. It comes with the territory. College hoops have nothing to do with getting kids educated.

He stated numerous times that he promised his parents he would in fact graduate. So, do you assume that ALL athletes are just hired guns that care nothing about academics?

That is it's sole purpose. I'm sure if you looked up the mission statement for The University of Kentucky it says it somewhere in there.

But I would almost guarantee if he would have been able to go straight to the NBA then he wouldn't be getting it at UK. Sure you can cheer for them and then hope they take their studies seriously. I did not say ALL are hired guns but the one and done's definitely are. Otherwise why recruit them.

My question is this, which scenario will prepare John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, et al, more for their careers? Focusing more on basketball and less on academics? Focusing more on academics and less on basketball? You get an education and a degree so you can get a good job after college. You're getting prepared for the work force. Few have the luxury to just go and learn, taking whatever classes might interest them at the moment. These kids are going to make their money playing basketball. It's always nice to hear about an elite athlete who excels in the classroom, but it's not the apocalypse when they don't. John Wall will likely have more money in the bank before his first NBA game than I'll earn in my lifetime after 5 years of college. Come on. This is ridiculous. And the people writing about it aren't concerned for the kids...they just want a story or don't want the "university to look bad". Who cares? I don't.
