Had that occurred instead it would have been extremely unfair to him being that he did nothing wrong. I could have understood if she would have asked about his injury, I'm sure a lot of people were wondering how badly he was injured.

 

I know you're a media member and both you and Jim usually defend them but try to answer this objectively. Do you really think that her asking him how he felt about getting knocked out on the first series was an intelligent and necessary question? Didn't you and pretty much everyone else already know that he felt crushed and extremely disappointed? It wasn't like it was some ground breaking information was gained from it. My point was with such an obvious question it could have waited until a press conference when he'd have had time to compose himself.

I didn't have a problem with her asking about the injury. I just thought the "How did it feel to be knocked out of the game on the first drive?" question was both stupid and unnecessary--simply asked to try and get an emotional response from McCoy. The answer was obvious before she asked it.

Since this kind of spilled over into the Tyler Smith thread in the college hoops forum, I figured it was appropriate to bring these two posts over here, for tidiness' sake (and so I don't have to retype all that stuff).

 

:rolleyes:Its not that they're fragile pre-teens. That wasn't my point. Sure, they are old enough that they should have some kind of self control. Getting ambushed by an asinine question seconds after a game and choosing to carry concealed weapons around in a car while you drink and smoke pot are two totally different things. McCoy had no choice in the matter, he was simply playing the game and got hurt. Smith and the others chose to do what they did. My big grip was the timing and stupidity of the question that was asked to McCoy.

Don't you think all of us pretty much knew that he wasn't happy about it? It was simply a dumb question. If she had just asked about what his injury was it would have been different--I'm sure a lot of people were wondering that. But asking how he felt about missing the game? Dumb question, thankfully he handled it with grace but he seemed within an eyelash of totally breaking down on national television--what purpose would that have served? She could at least given him a chance to compose himself and waited for the press conference (if he had been made available--again he's not a pro he owes no one an interview) to ask a question that was not exactly earth shattering news?

 

I'm sorry, but I don't view them as different. You can't have it both ways and treat them like a hardened adult when they do something bad/stupid, but with kid gloves when something bad happens to them. As one of the most high-profile college athletes in the United States the past few years, McCoy has been interviewed probably thousands of times, under every possible circumstance, perhaps as far back as his freshman year in high school. Stop making him out to be some beat-down, helpless victim here; he knows the score and has been playing the media game for a long time. It's part of the package when you choose to play sports at the highest levels. If he was that concerned about getting his feelings hurt by a reporter, he shouldn't play.

 

A championship game of any kind is a big moment, with lots of emotions attached. As the face of the team, McCoy almost certainly had to expect to be interviewed, and I'm sure he probably knew well in advance it wasn't going to be the most comfortable line of questioning he's been subjected to. I mean, how many camera shots of him going into the locker room and coming out did we see during the game? Do you think he was somehow unaware of the cameras tracking him?

 

And yes, it being a big game, fans want to know his reaction to it. Some might think he should be treated like a child, like you, but at the end of the day the interview was done because the audience as a whole wants to know. And as far as the timing of it goes, immediately after the game is the absolute critical time, because that's when you get your most honest answer. The fact that "all of us knew he was unhappy about it" is not the point; the reporter has to get it in his words, not assume what he might say or feel.

 

The reporter did her job, under a difficult circumstance, and McCoy handled it coolly, calmly and professionally like the experienced veteran he is. And besides, what's wrong with it if he does break down a little bit? It shows just how much the player cares. I like how it would be a bad thing for McCoy to possibly have shed a few tears, but Joker Phillips and Charlie Strong were hailed widely for their emotional moments at press conferences. Do you have the same criticisms for the reporters who prompted those moments from the two coaches?

If you didn't have the media, the only way you would know the result of a game is if you were in attendance.

Texas proved they belonged there, but when it got close again, Alabama made the plays they needed to make to get the W.

 

I do agree that Bama let them back in it by trying to run clock and giving the Horns young QB more field time to adjust, which he did enough to get them back in it. But credit the Tide for making the big plays whenever they needed them.

 

I think that was more of a case of superior talent.

Congrats to Alabama on the win, and winning another championship for the SEC. I'm happy for all of the die hard Tide fans on here. I really don't understand Saban scoring that last touchdown though. It showed a lack of class IMO. Why not just take the knee, and run the clock out? Did he feel that the margin needed to be bigger since McCoy missed all but 4 plays of the game? I also echo the sentiments of those who have already praised McCoy on the way he handled himself after the game. A very classy young man, and I wish him huge success in his pro career.

 

I have to disagree. Since when did football become a gentlemen's sport. Losing is a part of it, and people need to learn to lose with graciousness no matter the circumstances. Would taking a knee make the loss any less difficult for Texas to handle? I fault Saban for not being more agressive before the freshmen QB got comfortable. I guess I just don't believe in sportsmanship until the game is over.

I don't see what the big deal was. Texas still had timeouts remaining, I think at least 2. It was still just a 10 point game, it isn't like they were up 30 and decided to rub it in.

On most punt teams certain player looks for reads in formation. #13 Cory Reamer was our guy. The punter misread the read and thru the pass due to mis information from Cory. Do you really think our coach would call this pass when it was 4th and 17? The Coach will take the Blame, not put it on the kid.

 

Going for the last TD. The way we have handled their Kick offs losing 2 almost three you need to score. We get a late pick and took a knee, we try and score and y'all can cry, but we wanted a score and got one. If your team scores its OK, a team/Coach does this that you don't care for and you want to moan. I'd thrown a long pass on the final play...you don't want to play me in Ping Pong.

If he would not have under thrown the pass it would have been great. He was wide open.

Larry I don't want to argue but I don't buy that. It had to have been called. I can't see a player being stupid enough to do that on their own. JMO.

I agree. I think it was an automatic hot call. The split was uncovered. They spied 21 under after the snap. I think the punter was coached to throw it if they ever leave a split uncovered. Either way, it is still a coaching decision.:thumb:

I really think there was no dominant team in college football this year. The best won it all. Congrats to Bama! Hate to see McCoy knocked out of the game you dream about as a kid. I was pulling for Bama but that was tough! You think that DTackle is having a good night tonight lol.
