January 10, 201016 yr The sad thing about this game is that we still don't know who the best team is. Personally, I think Alabama was, but that's based on what I saw during the season when both teams were healthy. McCoy goes out and it changes everything. You can't put that much stock in Texas coming back with the freshmen QB because 'Bama shut it down and almost quit. I really feel bad for McCoy. But, beyond the personal aspect, it denied us a true matchup of the top two teams... As for the game, I thought the coaches choked as much as anyone involved. The fake punt early on was highly questionable, IMO. Also, 'Bama was running it down their throat but bailed Texas out several times by insisting on throwing the football and putting themselves in situation where they had to pass by taking a sack or throwing an incompletion. Ingram and Richardson were moving the chains at will. Then Alabama all but quit in the third quarter and nearly allowed this game to get away from them. On the flipside, Texas, with a freshmen QB who was looking overwhelmed has a chance to get to the half down only 17-6, but they try to get to mid-field for a hail mary that eventually costs them another 7. Huge, huge mistake, IMO. Considering what Gilbert had done to that point, I must ask, are the odds better that they can get to mid-field and then complete a hail mary or that he (or someone else) might make a mistake that leads to more points for the Tide? If they wanted to try to get in range for a bomb, yet stay conservative, why not just run the ball and see if the backs couldn't get you there. Personally, I couldn't believe they done anything but take a knee at that point. They should have been elated to get out of that situation down only 11. Those 7 points loomed large later in the game.
January 10, 201016 yr Crazy things can happen in football...regardless of how unlikely it might seem, I don't blame 'Bama for putting more points on the board. They nearly let this game get away from them by becoming too conservative in the third quarter. When you tack on a TD late in a 10 point game, I don't see that as running up the score.

I just don't want to pull out those Horn stats to prove my point. But I'm known very well for an really good debate on Bama/Yankees/ Baptism/OSAS.

If Texas kept McCoy in the game late in the game, and ran up the score, then Mack Brown is just as guilty. I rooted for Alabama. I always root for the SEC. I like Coach Saban, but I still think the last TD showed a lack of class. You can post as many stats as you want, it want change my opinion. You have your opinion, I have mine. There's nothing wrong with having different opinions.

As I stated earlier I like Saban. I believe his decision to add another TD when the Tide could have taken knees to end the game wasn't very classy. There was a similar discussion about Coach Cal the other day in the basketball forum. There was dicussion of him saying some stuff to one of the Louisville players during the game. I stated that if he in fact did say it, that he shouldn't have said it. It wasn't being very classy if he did say it. That doesn't mean I feel that Coach Cal is classless.

It's the national championship. There is no such thing as running up the score in a postseason game, IMO. You play to win and you don't take any chances.

They were up 10, and had it first and 10 with only 1:48 remaining. The game was over. It was obvious Texas wasn't using their 2 remaining timouts. They were taking a bigger chance of a fumble by running the ball.

Wall could have very easily pulled the ball out and ran out the clock but instead dunked the ball when his team was up 6 with only seconds on the clock. If anything what Wall did was worse because UK was up by more posessions and there was a lot less time.
January 10, 201016 yr Like I told AL, we have different opinions on the matter. :thumb: Maybe in HS or below, I'd agree. But in college or above, I think you punch it in if you can. FWIW, I agree that the safest play is to take the knee. But Bama got to where they were by running the ball. I'm sure they felt confidently enough to run the ball a few times & reward Ingram or Richardson & the offensive lineman with another scoring opportunity.

I'm sure Georgia would have fouled him also if he had pulled the ball back out.
