UK 72 Miami, OH 70

Featured Replies

To me this isn't much of a surprise. Cole is an excellent coach. His players are more talented than I thought they would be. UK is simply not that great right now. Their defense isn't very good, particularly at defending the 3. They have a ton of freshmen that are being counted on and its going to take a while. This team is going to lose some games and thats to be expected. But the talent is there and its going to take a while. Really UK was lucky to win. They got a few breaks officiating wise and at the same time made great plays down the stretch to win.

This is the first post that I have agreed with. Miami's coach is a great coach. Combining that with the fact that his team got hot from outside and you have a close call against a major team. That is how cinderella teams make it deep into the NCAA tournament. They are well coached and get a hot streak going.

Coach Cole made some great adjustments as well. Late in the game UK was really aggressive defensively and was out in the passing lanes so they started running back door cuts. They got it once and actually made 2 or 3 more open back door cuts, but the player with the ball missed them on the cut.

Plus he was very entertaining to watch! :D

Coach Cole of Miami let one reporter have it in the interview room after the reporter asked him how did he allow the game to slip away. Cole said something to the effect of, "UK. Future pro players. The Big Blue. We come in here with a good game plan and you're asking me how we let the game slip away! Why don't you ask John why he almost got beat!"

He wasn't happy with the question that was for sure.

Wonder if it was Tipton?:idunno: It didn't show the reporter on the news.

I watched about half way into the 2nd half. The guard play is way to undisciplined. I like the speed and the push, but the train wreck in the lane will have to reigned in a little. I'm not sure how they finished from the line , but the Cats didn't seem too impressive from the stripe either. Two things that kill you are TOs and missed FTs. If these become a trend, it will be an Achilles heel for this team. That being said, this would have been an L the past 5 or 6 seasons.

And they missed a few front end bonus attempts, and that's like missing two shots although it doesn't go in the stats that way.

I haven't followed Cal's career in detail but I have read that most of his teams have not been good free throw shooting teams. That's not good when it comes to crunch time, and his Memphis team felt it's sting in the 2008 championship game. I hope his UK teams are better in that area.

This thread is to be about the UK/Miami, OH game ONLY! Discussion of any other topic must go in a seperate thread.

This teams strength is inside. Period. After that it is penetration with the guards quickness. They need to improve their defense and free throw shooting along with just getting use to each other while learning a new system. If those things happen, and I think they will. I will not worry at all about the 3's because the other things will take care of it. JMO.

If KY doesn't start knocking down shots from the outside, you can forget about anything else opening up. Teams will just zone them to death, and that'll be that.

Much more talented teams than Miami are going to force them to make outside jumpers as the season rolls along. Count on that one...

Which is what most of CUSA was doing to Cal the last few seasons. They were able to flat out talent the issue at that level to win, but it will be interesting to see how it translates to the SEC. They'll still win a whole lot more than not, but expect some ugliness along the way...

No doubt. And UK will get much better than last night. You can count on that one too. :thumb:

No doubt, but you have to admit that has to include the ability to stretch a defense and force teams to guard the perimeter by consistently knocking down jump shots. Dodson looks to have that ability, but the rest of the roster is going to have to step it up there considerably.

If a team can pack in a 2-3 zone it eliminates most of the DDM concepts and clogs things up for the bigs inside as well as eliminates lanes to drive to the hoop. Not good when your best two guards have taken away what they do best from the get go. Agreed???

I'm not sure they have anybody on the team that can be a consistent shooter from long range this season...I don't see Wall or Bledsoe becoming that guy, that's not Darius Miller's game...Dodson is the only guy on the team that you'd consistently feel OK with shooting 3's. Harrelson is a good shooter, but I'm not sure you want him outside bombing threes all the time.

They've got some great pieces for the offense, but they're missing the guy(s) to balance it out and stretch the defense.

Hopefully, (more realistically) all of the guys can pick it up a notch and knock down enough long balls on any given night to open things up...it doesn't have to be the same guy as long as somebody does it. However, when that's the case, you know there are going to be games when its just not dropping for anybody, and when that happens it can be ugly.

The good news this year is that UK has enough talent and athleticism to give themselves a chance to win even if they struggle offensively...assuming they compete on the defensive end the way they should.

It's gonna be a fun year, because whether UK makes it to the final weekend or not, everybody knows they have the potential to be that good. That alone is a gigantic leap forward.

Absolutely, I think Dodson will have to be a major player along with Miller in knocking down jump shots. I'm just more concerned in the defense, free throw shooting and learning the system and becoming more fluid and becoming a team. I just think a lot of those, will make jump shots more favorable as time goes on. They can be great and not be great (over 40%) at hitting 3's as long as the mid range shots are consistent enough to compliment the inside and the dribble/drive.
