I read on Ryan Ernst's blog where he commented about whether Highlands should be considered the mythical "Greater Cincinnati" champion for 2009 (at least for the regular season). Is this a reasonable claim for Highlands to make?

 

Supporting information: Highlands is the only area team to defeat Cincinnati Saint Xavier, the team ranked 1st in the final Enquirer coaches' poll for Cincinnati teams. Also, Highlands finished the season undefeated against area competition.

 

Refuting information: Highlands' schedule was considerably weaker than several Cincinnati teams' schedules, and Highlands might not be able to go undefeated if playing Moeller's or Saint X's schedule (in fact, Highlands might have several losses playing such a schedule).

 

What does everyone think? And please be rational with your answer.

 

My answer is this: yes, they can claim such a mythical championship, given the reasons I discussed above. However, I do not think they are actually the best team in the area right now, and I definitely think that Highlands would have a few losses if they played St. X's schedule. Sometimes the team that wins a mythical championship is not always the actual "best" team, since mythical championships are usually more about resumes and not necessarily about which team is really the best on the field.

After this past weeks St. X/Moeller game I vote yes as well.

Believe it or not, Highlands was crowned Greater Cincinnati Champion in 1926 and 1930, according to their records. I don't know exactly who bestowed this title upon them, or when such a title stopped being given, however.

Everyone please be mindful of how you post here. The other thread on this topic had to be shut down because people seemed to forgot about BGP rule #2.

I really don't care if Highlands is considered the Mythical Greater Cincinnati champs or not. I hope the team will and I'm sure they will focus on one game at a time with the main goal of bringing home another State Championship. Congratulations for their victory over St. X, this is something no one can take away from this Team. Congatulations to St. X for their victory this past weekend and good luck to all the local teams as they continue their play throughout the playoffs!!!

I don’t have a dog anywhere close to this fight, so with an unbiased opinion I would say there is no such thing as a “mythical champion”.

 

If so anytime team A beats team B and team B wins their district, region, state, city, or whatever championship, team A then becomes the mythical champion?

 

I suppose if the above scenario is applied then Mayfield should be crowned the Tennessee 2A mythical champions.

I agree with you there.

It's an absolute joke for HHS, their fans, or anyone in NKY to attempt to lay claim to the mythical "Greater Cincy Championship."

 

It makes the whole area look uninformed & arrogant.

 

Highlands is a very good team. They're the odds on favorite to win the state championship in KY. Enjoy it, but don't gloat in it. They beat ONE Cincinnati team.
