Big wrong in the bolded part, CF. The OHSAA numbers you posted are only for grades 9, 10 and 11. The KHSAA numbers you posted for Highlands are for all 4 high school grades. Add approximately another 300 boys to X's total and the difference becomes over a 1000 boys in the high schools.

Thanks for the post JBWill2. Back in 1943 they declared a Greater Cincinnati Champion, and Highlands was declared the champion based on its victory over Cincinnati St. Xavier who was undefeated. In this same year highlands was selected as one of the 2 best teams in Kentucky and invited to play Ashland for the state championship in I believe the Rotary Bowl. Highlands won that game becoming KY State Champions. Since they did not have a playoff system in place they attached the word "mythical".

2009 Highlands is the best team in Cincinnati. We will have to see if they are the best team in Kentucky, but they have a good shot at it.

This thread was on BGP yesterday before getting removed. It's not a coincidence that a lot of BGP's subjects end up on Ernst's blog (or in his articles) the following day. I'm not bashing Ryan, because I love what he brings to the table, I'm just sayin...

I don't really understand the USA Today comment, but I'll go on.

I feel that it makes NKY, and the rest of KY look bad, when one of our best football teams (and programs) starts talking about how they deserve the mythical Greater Cincinnati crown because they beat St. X.

You don't see any GCL teams jumping for joy when they beat HHS, CCH, Trinity or Louisville St. X.

It's inaccurate to suggest that HHS would beat all of the other teams. They may...or they may not.

As to the bolded part, you don't read Yappi much. Whenever a Cincy school beats a N. Ky or for that matter a Ky school, the site fills up with posts about how much better Cincy football is than N. Ky/Ky football. They take absolute delight in running down N. Ky/Ky football and probably are jumping with joy. Are they uninformed and arrogant when claiming their superiority without having beaten every football team in Ky? Or can they legitimately claim that Ohio football is better than football in N.Ky/Ky when they regularly beat the best that N. Ky/Ky has to offer?

Highlands does not have to beat every one in Cincy to claim they are the best in Cincy any more than CovCath had to beat every 5A team in Ky in 2006 to proclaim they were the best 5A team in Ky that year.

Or are you now stating that CovCath wasn't necessarily the best 5A team in Ky in 2006 because they didn't beat every 5A team in Ky that year?

Which is it; it can't be both.

Highlands has a great team, maybe the best in the Commonwealth.

But it's my humble opinion that to lay claim to the "champion of Cincinnati", way more than one Cincinnati team should be vanquished.

I agree, unless you play that kind of competition week in and week out which Highlands has not.

I know that Highlands' records indicate they won a "mythical" state championship in 1943, but are you sure they were also given the title of "mythical" Greater Cincinnati champion? I know they beat Cincy St. X that year, but my records only have 1926 and 1930 listed as years when HHS was crowned "mythical" Greater Cincinnati champion.

Ahhh...caught me red-handed! :notworthy:

I will amend my original post and account for only grades 9-11 at Highlands, if that's possible.

-CF

REVISED

St. Xavier - 1,171 boys

Colerain - 846 boys (325 less than X)

Elder - 689 boys (482 less than X)

Moeller - 671 boys (500 less than X)

OHSAA: 2009-2011 Enrollment Figures

Highlands - 324 boys (847 less than X)*

(2008-2009 AUDITED SCHOOL ENROLLMENTS)

* - adjusted to represent grades 9-11 only. Is now an "apples-to-apples" comparison to OHSAA figures above.

So, to put this in perspective. Consider the following equation:

The DIFFERENCE in size between St. Xavier and Highlands = Colerain

-CF

Highlands does not have to beat every one in Cincy to claim they are the best in Cincy any more than CovCath had to beat every 5A team in Ky in 2006 to proclaim they were the best 5A team in Ky that year.

You know, LN, I definitely see your argument here. I was thinking about that for a while yesterday. However, when any team is dubbed "state champion", these days, it's because they were champion of a tournament that was specifically designed to determine who the state champion was. The bracketing system is designed (as an alternate to the round robin tournament) to pit victors against victors against victors until one team has beaten the victors of all of the bracketed competitions. ...And I'm not trying to sound like I'm expalining this to you for the first time, but my point is this:

Highlands has beaten a very good St. X. team. Yes, St. X has beaten other very talented teams like Elder and Moeller, but Highlands has only beaten St. X. That's a major accomplishment for Highlands and for any Kentucky team. However, for Highlands to claim simply by beating St. X that they are the "Greater Cincinnati Champion" (which I realize that you, LN, have not done) it would be like a team getting 4 straight byes in the state tournament, and then saying they were champion when they beat the one team that they played in the finals.

C'mon LN, you're better than that.

Any KY state champion at least plays more than ONE school in their division. They play multiple teams in districts (both home & away) and then they play multiple teams throughout the playoffs. Although they may not beat EVERY team, there's no doubt that they've at least played a large enough sample size to accurately gauge where they stand.

I did not state that HHS needed to beat EVERY Cincy team to be win this mythical championship. I simply stated that they should at least play more than ONE before they try to lay claim to the title.

And yes, I think that Cincy fans look uninformed & arrogant when they trash KY football after they beat Highlands, Cov Cath, Ryle, etc. Although HHS & CCH have traditionally been two of the better teams throughout the state, there is plenty of other good football in KY (St. X, Male, Trinity, etc.) The fact that Cincy fans don't recognize how few students most of our schools have to compete with makes them uninformed. Trashing our schools (on a statewide level) without ever playing them makes them appear arrogant.

How were the pre-state tournament champions determined? I know KHSAA only lists "state champions" from the 1950's and on. What was the method previous to that?

C'mon LN, you're better than that.

I am pretty good, you're right there. :D Just kidding.

The state champion plays one, just one, team from the other side of the bracket. The theory is that since they beat the best team from the other side of the bracket, the winning team is better than every team from the other side of the bracket. That theory is applicable to those that want to claim Highlands is the mythical Grerater Cincy champion. X beat Colerain, Moe, Elder and LaSalle, thus in theory making them the best team from the Cincy bracket (Anderson contentions noted). Highlands, being considered to be the best team out of the N. Ky bracket beat X (SK contentions noted), thus making Highlands claim that it is the mythical Greater Cincy champion as valid as CovCath's claim that it was better than all 5A teams in the west bracket in 06.

Touche!!!!!!!!

Trinity smoked Elder 44-20 in 2002. Elder then won out and won Ohio's state title. Does that make Trinity the Ohio and Kentucky State Champs for '02?
