January 27, 201115 yr "The Nuclear Age" by Tim O'Brien I loved The Things They Carried, how is this one?
January 27, 201115 yr I loved The Things They Carried, how is this one? While it doesn't have the absolute excellence that The Things They Carried did, I'm really enjoying it. Like that book, he's playing with the idea of what is true and what isn't, but uses an extremely unreliable narrator to make it work here. I'd also really recommend his other books, especially Going After Cacciato. He's one of my favorite writers.
January 27, 201115 yr The Jewel of His Heart [Heart of the West, Bk 2] by Maggie Brendan A Love of Her Own [Heart of the West, Bk 3] by Maggie Brendan A romantic style that perfectly captures life on the American frontier, introducing them to rugged, independent souls and their inner spiritual struggles, and the quest for love that is set in 1890s Montana.
February 8, 201115 yr Finished the Baldacci books (plus two more of them). Finished "Charm City" by one of my favorite crime fiction writers, Laura Lippman. It's obvious that she loves her native Baltimore; just a few miles away from papa's old stomping grounds. Moving on to something a little more dense. I finally found "Confusion", Book 2 of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. I had read the first book - "Quicksilver" - some time ago; and I picked up a copy of Book 3 - "System of the World" - a couple of years ago, but was waiting until I found Book 2 so I could read them all in order. Finally, Half-Price Books comes through. So now I'm re-reading Quicksilver. A fascinating book that is a combination of historical fiction and 17th/18th-century science fiction; and it ties to another of his books, Cryptonomicon, set in the 20th century. I hope the next two books in the series measure up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Baroque_Cycle An observation - I read Cryptonomicon first and would recommend that anyone that is interested in reading The Baroque Cycle do the same.
April 25, 201115 yr Finished the Baroque Cycle 3 or 4 weeks ago. Since then I read one of the John Sanford "Prey" novels, "A Modern Treasury of Great Detectives and Murder Mysteries", and about half of "The Complete Sherlock Holmes". Picked up an odd box of books at a local auction not long ago. Mostly swords and sorcery stuff. Most of the "Shannara" books by Terry Brooks. I read the first one in the series (The Sword of Shannara) but found it to be pretty much a juvenile ripoff of Tolkien's LOTR series, so the rest will probably go to the local library or Goodwill. Also in the box were several of Anne McCaffrey's "Pern" series. So I've read Dragonflight, Dragonquest, Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums, The White Dragon, Moreta, Nerilka's Story, and am about halfway through Dragonsdawn. Finally, there is a 4-volume set of Louis L'Amour books called "The Sacketts" in the box (this box cost me three bucks, so I've gotten my money's worth). I can't recall that I've ever read a western; I'm sure I have at some point in time but I really can't say for certain. I may give the first one a try after I'm finished with the "Dragon" books (a couple more to go).

Maybe you could read them aloud and record the, and I'll send them to my dad.

April 25, 201115 yr Reading 56* about the year Joe D had his hitting strak as well as a new book about Branch Rickey. I also have but have not started a book about a minor league game in 1981 that went 33 innings. It's called "Bottom of the 33rd."
April 25, 201115 yr Great read especially for a youngster who didn't have the opportunity to grow up during that era. Definitely true. I enjoy learning about the Big Red Machine since I didn't have the opportunity to watch them. It has also given me a new appreciation for the Reds.
