Read Bruce Catton or Shelby Foote for the Civil War . " Crusade in Europe " about WWII by Dwight David Eisenhower .

I think the 3-volume set I have about the Civil War is by Shelby Foote. I'll be reading it at some point. I've got a six-volume set on WWII by Winston Churchill.

 

Also, John Keegan has a Civil War book I'd like to get. I've really enjoyed his works on the two world wars.

 

And, I plan on reading the Jeff Shaara novels again at some point. I started Rise To Rebellion for the second time, but then I got a bunch of new books and started reading them.

Did you ever end up reading "If They Don't Win It's A Shame"?

Another excellent book. I also read the sequel "World Without End". Also great. I'd recommend it if you haven't read it already.

 

I've read it. I was a bit disappointed in World Without End, though. Can't quite put my finger on it. But it didn't leave me as "fulfilled" as "Pillars of the Earth".

Have you read any of Shaara's other books, RM? I just recently read them all in about 3-4 months. I think there's 10 including his father's book about Gettysburg, The Killer Angels.

 

I haven't read any of the others yet. They're on my winter list.

Last night I finished David Baldacci's, "Absolute Power". I really enjoyed it and plan on reading more of his stuff in the future. They just don't have many options of his at the school library.

 

I am about to start John Grisham's, "Rainmaker".

Not yet. I haven't been reading at my normal pace this summer. It is in the queue though---I'll read it very soon.

I can't recommend them enough. Probably my favorite author now. I suppose you'll finish the WWII trilogy first. I think the pair of books on the American Revolution, Rise To Rebellion and The Glorious Cause were my favorites.

 

The fact that he writes a novel, while remaining historically accurate, is pretty neat. Informative and entertaining.

 

I'd be curious to know what you think if/when you read them.

I can't recommend them enough. Probably my favorite author now. I suppose you'll finish the WWII trilogy first. I think the pair of books on the American Revolution, Rise To Rebellion and The Glorious Cause were my favorites.

I'm looking forward to the remaining WWII volumes. I love that period of history. I am, for some reason, less enthusiastic about American History.

No. Since you're the person in this thread who mentioned several of the books I've read, and loved, I'll have to check him out though. How does he and his style compare to Shaara?

 

To be honest, I never had a lot of enthusiasm for history in general, particularly military history, until I started reading Shaara's books. Now, I'm enthralled by the Revolution, the Civil War, and the World Wars. Even his book on the Mexican War was fascinating to me.

 

If you like WWII, I'd suggest John Keegan's book on that subject, The Second World War I believe, if you haven't read it already. I read it, and just finished his book on the First World War. The two are inseparable. It is a fascinating drama.

 

I reckon Shaara is working on a WWII novel focusing on the Pacific theatre...should be out by spring of 2011. Can't wait.

I'll check them all out! If I can plow through Nero Wolfe, I can certainly make it through the Civil War.

 

John Jakes is the author of the Kent Family Chronicles. The story begins during the French Revolution. I can't mention the first title, because it would be a BGP rule-breaker. I can PM it to you if you like.

 

He has another series you'd really enjoy that I've read, the North and the South trilogy.
