I hope everyone knows that the actual Bank of Kentucky has nothing to do with the BOK Center... They're just the major sponsor, have nothing to do with this decision...

 

Good point, the folks at BOK I know are all solid folks and this is a management company issue. Personally I think the 10th should be back at the Fieldhouse to appease their fans. As a 9th Region fan and huge HS basketball fan I am excited to be able to see the 10th REgion up here at BOK. Great opportunity to see some awesome basketball.

I hope you are correct in this. But I still say everyone should boycott the concession stands to let these folks now just how wrong the decision to keep radio out is. How can you do this to elderly folks you can't come, those who have lost their jobs and don't have the money to come or those you put their child's education first and refuse to drive 1 - 2 hours on a school night to a ballgame. Let them know that this is wrong!!!

The charge you are referring to is the Rights Fee charged by the KHSAA for the Sweet Sixteen for a radio broadcast and includes a telephone line. It is not charged by Rupp Arena.

Speaking as a broadcaster, the charging of fees at tournaments is nothing new. In year's past, I've had to pay a fee to broadcast the 8th Region - but never more than $100 to broadcast the whole thing. But $10,000, even for a live cable broadcast, is absurd for HS basketball.

 

Fortunately, the folks in the 8th Region realized a long time ago that this is a community event; people who want to come will find a way to be there, and those who can't come want to listen. They dropped their broadcast fee several years ago. Which is very important to webcasters such as myself, for whom $100 is a lot of money.

 

The fee the KHSAA charges is a little different. You can only broadcast at the Sweet 16 if you are designated by a team participating in the Sweet 16 as "their official" broadcast outlet. You can only do that' team's games. You pay the $500 for the broadcast rights to any and all of that team's games only, which includes the phone line. You cannot do any other games at the Sweet 16, which is how the KHSAA protects their Sweet 16 Network.

I'm supposed to have the guys from the BOK on the show tomorrow. I have a call into them currently to see what the deal is. This is a shame. We were planning on doing the entire tournament and I've never heard of a fee.

Totally agree with the Colonel. The 8th Region has done it right by the broadcasters that come to New Castle. I remember 2 years ago, there were 2 folks broadcasting the Shelby/Gallatin game. They made room for all three of us. (Colonel Mike, myself and the Shelby County radio station). I was so looking forward to broadcasting and shooting our video of the tournament. Still waiting to hear from the arena.

I think some people that are surprised and upset at the $10,000 price tag are a bit confused. That is the price for the local cable company in NKY to broadcast both the 9th and 10th semifinals and the finals, That's 4 games if it's just the boys and 8 if the girls are included too.

 

The Telecommunications Board of Northern Kentucky (TBNK Sports) does not have the funding, satellite trucks, etc. to do live broadcasts. They have an extremely professional production (props to Gametime) that creates broadcasts for airplay a few days...sometimes a week or so later. The TBNK has been in negotiations with the BOK arena to tape Regional games for later broadcast. TBNK Sports is different than and unrelated to the ICN-6 broadcast which airs live and has commercials. The BOK arena quoted the TBNK a price of $10,000.00 for non-live, commercial free, taped replays. My point is the 10K price is not just reserved for the live commercial broadcast. And, by the way, 10K for the live ICN broadcast would be outrageous as well.

Thanks for posting all this info, but I know this, as I used to run a floor camera during the TBNK games. But they are not the cable company, they oversee Insight, which you also stated. GT said he was still waiting to see what, if any fee the tape delay broadcasts would cost, hopefully nothing, as of two days ago he said he did not know if a fee was going to be applied for tape delay, or if it was just for the live broadcasts. The original post said Insight, not TBNK.

Let's reserve for another day whether $10,000.00 for ICN-6 to broadcast the games live on TV is reasonable. I think we are otherwise on the same page. The Bank of Kentucky Arena should not charge an unreasonable amount for, or outright prohibit, internet/radio broadcasts, or taped delay video broadcasts. Fans in Montgomery County, Clark County, Mason County, or Covington and Ft. Thomas for that matter, should not be denied the opportunity to catch the games on the internet or radio because of BOK management's desire to pocket $10,000.00. We all will keep our fingers crossed that cooler heads prevail and we can get back to more important issues...like why the heck Cov. Cath. can't hit a free throw.
