How long is the trip? I apologize in advance if someone already posted this. I don't think it will affect the eventual outcome; but I do believe that many slow starts in games can be attributed to long trips.

Whitley County High School is located off exit 15 on Interstate 75, turn left off the off ramp and go approx. 1 mile, the entrance to the school is on the left.

 

If you plan to eat prior to the game, in Williamsburg you will find the Cumberland Inn, and assorted fast food. In Corbin (exit 29 & 25) there are several resturants including Applebees.

 

Seating is limited at WCHS on the visitors sideline, although it is a great place to watch a football game. There is parking at the school but there could be a large crowd.

 

Highlands has a great team this year. There is no doubt that they have a bunch of athletes and tradition on their side. Whitley is in uncharted territory for their team. Everything appears to be going for Highlands with the small exception of it being on the road. There is no reason to think that Whitley can compete. But they have not gotten to this point without being a good football team. With the exception of Bell County they have knocked down everything that has been in their path this season. Many times when nobody gave them a chance. They have stopped Ricky Bowling, Zach Lewis, Steven Duckworth, and Charlie (Tim Tebow of the Mts) Banks twice. They faced 3 Mr. Football canidates and each of them left with a loss. Yeah the odds are pretty steeply stacked against the Colonels, but I would not bet against them.......

 

 

Sometimes a team is just in the right place at the right time and everything falls into place. Not taking anything away from Highlands but this is a Whitley team that has overcome more than people know and sometimes being in the right place at the right time is more important than being the team with tradition.

 

To be the best you have to beat the best, That is where Whitley is, with an opportunity to beat the best, what more could they ask than 48 minutes to settle it and win lose or draw you leave knowing that you did your best.

TM, thanks for the directions. I met one of the Bell County coaches last night at the UT vs UK game and he mentioned stopping your FB is a big part of stopping your offense. I'm not sure if this is true or not but I'm sure the coaching staff at Highlands will figure it out or I hope so.

Someone mentioned CovLatin not getting any 6'6"/ 250 lb players...beside the point that they don't have a FB team, they DID get a guy named David Justice, who turned out to be a pretty fair athlete!!

 

As for the HHS advantage...nobody has mentioned the tradition of playing deep into the playoffs every year gives extra practice/game time to kids. Comparing, a typical HS FB player by the end of his Soph yr has played 20-22 games. A HHS FB player has played 30games. (using the last 2 yrs as data). Our Sophs have JR experience. Big advantage for winning programs.

 

What style offense does WC run? Wishbone, Veer, Dead T? What's their run to pass ratio? And most importantly, do they play incessant music betweeen every play? (lol)

Highlands had a nice physical match up against Station, doubt this will be any worse.

 

I have seen Byran Station and yes Whitley is much more physical than BS. Totally different type of offensive team and overall mentality.

 

Someone mentioned you must stop the FB according to a coach at the UK/UT game. That coach must have been the special teams coach. You have to stop the QB he is the focus and best player on the Whitley team. All 4 backs in the ace formation are very physical runners with decent speed.

 

Size wise this match-up will be even or near even. WC is not a big team. Speed wise HHS has an advantage.

 

But I have heard on other thread you are down 21 when you come to the mountains. Also their is lots of firetrucks in Whitley co. so a muddy field should be expected. :lol::lol:

 

On a serious note Whitley has a wonderful field as good as any HS or college in KY.

I don't know whether it's been written already, but this will be the first time ever that Highlands has faced Whitley County in football. That's pretty neat.

 

Highlands just needs to stay focused. Well done thus far and Go 'Birds, Take State in '08!

 

On a side note, I am currently spending time with some of my wife's family in Bangladesh (11 time zones away), and to celebrate Highlands' big win against JC I wore one of my Highlands shirts here yesterday, marking the first time in the history of this country that someone has worn a shirt with the phrase "Fear the 'Bird!" written on it. Wooohoooo!!

My gut says Highlands is going to pull this one out because I know how good they are and no doubt I was rooting for them last week. But a part of me would like to see Whitley County pull it out and head to Papa John's Stadium for the first time [is that what someone said!].

 

Either way, I gotta go with my gut..Highlands by 2 TD's.

Really good point on the playing experience. For players who really need the development time, that extra 13 to 15 weeks of practice and games comes into play by their senior years. Huge factor in my opinion.
