Highlands is the high school for the Ft Thomas Independent School District. It is a public school. Highlands loses more kids to other schools than it gains. We could post the NewCath roster and list a whole bunch of kids that live in the Ft Thomas school district but don't go to Highlands. There are also kids from Ft Thomas that go to CovCath, Cov Latin, Summit Country Day, Cincinnati St X and others.

 

If you look at all the postings about the number of surnames for Highlands you will see a all the kids from families that have played at Highlands for generations.

 

So tell me how Highlands gets the pick of NKY when Beechwood, NewCath & CovCath are in the running for a state championship in football every year.

 

Highlands get families that stay in Ft Thomas so the kids can go to an excellent public school system and the kid can go to the same school as their parents and be part of a strong community.

 

As for football, these kids work their tails off year round in the same system for years with an unparalleled coaching staff. They respect their opponents each week and come to play on Friday's and this Friday will be no exception.

 

Whitley will see a smallish team come out on the field on Friday and think: This is Highlands??? and not be impressed.

 

I hope and expect they feel differently 48 minutes later.

I agree Daddy Cat. Tradition has put the Birds in position to play big games, which ultimately gives the players the experience. Without the experience, the tradition won't win games on it's own, but they do go hand in hand.

Then why did you. FTH and Bwood are magnet football schools. Kids who can play football choose to go there for a better opportunity to win a championship. I would guess no 6-6 260lbers go to Cov. Latin.

The schools and communities are outstanding. I have seen Highlands play many times I can be certain they will not be small. THey will be lean, fast and well coached. They will play at least 40 players in a close game and 70 in a blowout and thats without Freshman.

Something I have learned over many years of coaching and being a high school football fan is ALL players and coaches work their tails off. Even the ones who havent won 17 championships.

Whitley will have to play an outstanding game to win. No turnovers, ball control and pressure on the qb which will be difficult because Highlands can run the ball well also.

This is true. However, those who have won 17, or however many, have done so because of the extraordinary amount of work they put into it. No matter what anyone wants to believe to the contrary, that's the simple truth.

Because, this is the first time I am aware of that Highlands has played Whitley Cty and it seemed somewhat reasonable to set the record strait for their fans.

This is true. I have two brothers, a father, an uncle and a cousin who all played for the Birds. And I would've given an appendage or two to have done the same. Most of the rest of the family were students there.

 

 

I agree that the Whitley Co. folks will be surprised that we don't have a squad full of huge players.

To be honest, when we played LCA I expected them to be much bigger than they were. They were not monstorous cavemen but solid, fundamental football players. I kind of think that about HHS.

I dont think there needs to be any further justification for where the talent comes from at Highlands. Everybody outside of our region will have their own excuses and viewpoints. I would say that 96% of the kids who play football for the Birds have a relative of some sort who either grew up in Fort Thomas at one time or they have multiple relatives that live there today. It is an excellent school system and folks move to Ft. Thomas from other areas to start their own family traditions. I know many parents who have moved to Fort Thomas and have very young kids or kids just entering the school system. With that said, the mass majority of kids who suit up you can trace back over the decades to fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins and there is a connection.

I had a chance to watch Whitley County play against Newport this season and WC pounded Newport. Highlands is a solid team and WC appeared to be solid against Newport but Newport is not a Highlands so I see Highlands winning this one by 2 td's. Now if WC can play a hard hitting game against Highlands they can possibly pull one off but I just believe that the Birds have too much experience. That is one thing I have noticed about Coach Mueller - he makes sure that he always has experience players - seems like the Birds know how to keep their jrs and sophs experienced. A lot of teams neglect what they have on the side lines and then wonder why they cannot compete.

People say it doesn't matter what happened last game, last year, or decades ago. But it does! Those players who might not have gotten experience did so because Coach Mueller made it a point to get them into games the year before. And he had that luxury because of the efforts of that season's team.

 

It's a chain, and it stretches back through the decades. It won't win the game this Friday. We learned that against Bryan Station. But it gives our young men an advantage that's very hard to duplicate.

While it may be true that all football players and Coaches work, working ones tail off is a very subjective statement. There are programs in Northern Kentucky that have training/conditioning programs that would not qualify as working their tails off compared to the regimen the Birds are used to. This is why those programs are always groomsmen and never the Groom when it comes to football success. Some of those schools have 800+ boys to choose from and still cannot compete with Highlands because of Highlands work ethic on the part of Coaches and Players and Families!
