Comments on an IU board...

 

--Don’t you guys realize that the credibility of IU’s program is at stake here. There are always warning signs in a case like this. No 17 or 18 year old kid can hide the fact he is heavily into marijuana or crack cocaine. All it would have taken is a good background check and/or an observant person regarding who his friends were, his speech patterns and language, and so on. Do be able to spot this kind of trouble is not rocket science, for goodness sakes. Whatever the cost to monitor a player’s behavior before signing them would have been cheap compared to what this incident is going to cost in terms of damaging IU’s and Sampson’s credibility. Do you think the parents of a Christian kid, for example, will want their kid coming to IU, which now obviously doesn’t even recognize the personality, attitudes, friends and habits of a possible crack cocaine dealer. Wake up fellows!!

 

--HA! There should be checks done, Bud isn’t the “all around kinda guy”. If you’ve been able to relate with him at school, you’d know that. He screwed up big time, and it serves him right. This isn’t a one time thing, it’s reoccurring. As a 2008 graduate, I’ve been with him for the past 3 years and it’s been all the same. He, frankly, isn’t the only one at SCHS with these types of problems.

Scareface, thanks for posting that from the IU boards, even though I think it's garbage and coming from people who don't have a clue. Hopefully 98NCC who as everyone knows is a huge IU fan will set those people straight! Those people only care about ONE thing, about IU and wins, they don't care about the kid, and every college has fans like this.

 

For them to say that a background check would have found this out is again laughable! They have NO CLUE of the personality and attitude of Mackey! He has always been a good kid, but again, good kids also get into trouble. As I stated before, this happens at EVERY SCHOOL, and if someone doesn't believe it then they need a reality check.

 

I would not look at IU or their coach in a negative manner for giving a kid a second chance, now if a school gives a kid a second chance and he messes that up and they still keep him, well then I MAY look down on that school and coach.

 

On the second post, how does anyone know that guy really went to Scott Co? Even if he did we don't even know if that guy and Mackey got along or if the guy just disliked him.

I believe Trafficking in a CS 1st is a Class C felony which carries 5-10 years. Another poster stated it was a Class B and if so, but that would be 10-20 and I don't think that is accurate.

There's a big difference in feeling sorry for someone and defending their actions. Anyone who knows anything about the toll that drugs can take on a persons life, or has ever had a close friend or family member go down that road would probably feel sorry for him. If he's guilty, he deserves to be punished...but it won't stop me from feeling sorry for him. Hopefully, this will be shock he needed to clean up his life, and if it does that, then this may be the best thing that ever happened to him.

 

I think comments along the lines that "his life is ruined" are a bit over the top. That all depends on how he responds to this situation...if he chooses to continue on this path, then his life was already ruined, but if he chooses to straighten up because of this, then this was exactly what he needed. So what if this derails his basketball career...there are more important things. If this gets him to straighten up, then his life will be far better off whether he plays basketball or not, as opposed to the alternative of playing basketball while being involved with drugs.

 

I won't defend his actions, but I certainly feel sorry for him. He's obviously made a poor decision by choosing to get involved with drugs...but I know other people who I'd have never dreamed that have done the same thing. I'm aware that people sometimes can get caught up in that life and be in too deep before they realize what a terrible mistake they've made...at that point, it's really hard to pull themselves out and unfortunately, it usually takes hitting rock bottom to get them out.

The drug statutes are a complicated mess Jed and I have to arraign (ask defendants if they are guilty or not) drug defendants and tell them the possible penalties. I get to do it alot since my area has a reservoir of criminal defendants.

Don't see how Sampson can't pull it.....unless he wants to get the ole UC rep.

Bad for Mackey though. UC never took a player pending charges... Just the players that get charges while playing...

This doesn't have to be the death sentence for his college career, but if the charges stand up, I have a hard time believing he'll be playing high school ball this year. Terrible story, and it just makes me angry to hear about someone with immense talent doing something so stupid.

Very sad case but often common just look at Duran Jefferson. You sometmes cant take the street thug out of a kid just because he is an outstanding athlete.

 

If he leaves no worries, another Mr. B-Ball candidate will transfer in. :lol:

In regards to academics, I imagine this event will interfere with his ability to get the core requirements necessary to be eligible through the NCAA clearing house which will affect his scholarship. Always sad to see talent being wasted in this manner.

From what I have heard, this is not a one time deal...

Look at this way, Scott County officials had him arrested.

If a kid is skipping class, they are usually not punished until after a short period of time and do not go "looking" for him...so there is something that was a trigger to go and find him....why?...history?

 

If you read the article, the superintendent Blankenship mentions how he has never been in trouble.

You don't think its easy to notice a kid that is 6'4 and one of the best basketball players in the country from your class is not there? Here's what happens guy.

Kid is missing from class and it is known he is at school-call the office.

Office checks to make sure he wasnt checked out or something-he wasnt-go find him. This is procedure for ANY kid in just about ANY high school. I know it was in mine.

If a teacher KNOWS a student was in school earlier that day then the teacher will have a student go look for him, go look for him his/herself or call the office to see if he signed out.
